TEWKSBURY, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 28, 1995--Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVID) today announced shipment of Release 5.5 for its industry-leading Media Composer and Film Composer family of digital nonlinear film and video editing systems. Release 5.5 extends the Media Composer family's powerful online finishing capabilities to include support for seamlessly integrated, real-time 3D effects and adds an integrated, hardware-independent QuickTime codec, as well as numerous other features. Avid also announced it is now shipping Avid Film Cutter, a new low-cost, 24 frame-per-second (fps) digital nonlinear film editing system for independent filmmakers.

"With Version 5.5, we are pleased to provide the most robust set of editing and finishing tools in the industry for video and film professionals," said Dave Cobosco, director of product management for Avid's Post Production Products group. "Release 5.5 adds unmatched capabilities to our systems, such as the ability to create an extensive range of sophisticated 3D effects from directly within the Media Composer editing software in real-time, offering Avid customers unparalleled levels of productivity, creativity and flexibility."

Avid's 3D Effects Module - Seamless Integration of Real-time 3D Effects

With Release 5.5, real-time customizable 3D digital effects capabilities, including four-way page curls and twists, 24 shape effects, 3D spheres, flying 3D titles and more, are now available for Media Composer 1000, 4000 and 8000 systems with the company's new 3D Effects module. The 3D Effects module integrates seamlessly into the Media Composer software, allowing users to create 3D effects from directly within the Media Composer's standard effects palette. Users can adjust the position and parameter of a 3D effect at any time and play it back instantly at full-speed, off-speed, in reverse or frame-by-frame, with no pre-roll or wait for tape. Effects can be directly manipulated using wireframe control or sliders for unprecedented flexibility and control.

Avid's 3D Effects module offers effects including resize with rotation and perspective; smooth motion path effects with spline-based positioning; scaling and rotation; internal borders, including beveled edge and rounded borders; drop shadows (with varying opacity and placement); keyed graphics; and alpha channel manipulation for real-time flying titles. Users can also map a video channel to geometric shapes, such as spheres, sine waves and raindrops.

Integrated QuickTime Codec

Release 5.5 adds a hardware-independent QuickTime codec to all Media Composer models, which provides users with greater speed and creative flexibility when working with QuickTime effects. Because it does not rely on Avid hardware for processing, Avid's QuickTime codec for Media Composer lets users apply QuickTime effects to their Avid media files on a separate Macintosh system, thus giving them the option to free up their Media Composer system for more editing.

Avid Film Cutter

Also available with Release 5.5 is Avid's new Film Cutter system, a low-cost, 24 fps editing system for independent filmmakers and small film production studios. Based on the same fifth-generation, award-winning editing software as the Avid Film Composer system, Film Cutter features a customizable, easy-to-use interface optimized for film editing and allows users to create and preview dissolves, fades, dips, motion effects, freeze frames and titling from within the system. Film Cutter offers a variety of offline image resolutions, two channels of CD-quality audio and frame-accurate negative cut list and EDL generation.

Pricing and Availability

Version 5.5 software, the 3D Effects module and Film Cutter are all shipping now. Version 5.5 software is standard on all new Media Composer systems and current users of Power Macintosh- or Power Quadra-based Media Composer systems under Avid's maintenance program will receive 5.5 software at no charge. With Release 5.5, all new Media Composer 8000 systems include Avid's 3D Effects module; new Media Composer 1000 and 4000 customers can add the 3D Effects module to their systems for $14,995 (U.S. list price). Current Media Composer 1000, 4000 and 8000 customers with Power Macintosh- or Power Quadra-based systems can also upgrade their systems to include the 3D Effects module. Film Cutter is available at a U.S. list price of $32,500 for a complete system and is upgradeable to the Avid Film Composer system.
