AUTOMOTIVE NEWS CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AUTOMOBILE IN AMERICA

DETROIT, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the automobile in America, Automotive News will produce "America at the Wheel," a special commemorative issue. To be published on Sept. 21, 1993, the exact 100th anniversary of the Duryea brothers' historic ride, this issue will chronicle the history and social impact of the auto in America.
"The tremendous impact the automobile has had on American life and culture makes this 100th anniversary an extraordinary occasion," said Keith Crain, publisher and editorial director, Automotive News, and vice chairman, Crain Communications, Inc. "'America at the Wheel' will be a true milestone marker for the automotive industry in this century, illustrating how the automobile is so tightly woven into every aspect of our lives. At the same time, we envision this book as the source of choice for information and reference about the industry whether one be an academic, historian or automobile enthusiast."
The origins of the American gasoline-powered automobile go back to the early 1890s. Experimenters across the U.S. were in a fierce competition to create the first American "horseless buggy," when on Sept. 21, 1893, a pair of bicycle-making brothers, Charles E. and J. Frank Duryea, drove a puttering one-cylinder vehicle along the streets of Springfield, Mass. Their historic drive led three years later to the Duryea Motor Wagon Co. and the U.S. car industry.
With the Duryeas' invention, America took its first step into an era of dramatic change. "The automobile has become such an integral part of our culture, influencing how we work, how we play, how we live, everything," said Peter Brown, associate publisher and editor, Automotive News. "We will not only chronicle the history of the auto in 'America at the Wheel,' but also explore the impact this invention has had on our country."
"America at the Wheel" will include:
-- A chronological analysis by noted automotive historians of significant automotive developments from the 1890s through the present day
-- In-depth exploration of the auto's sociological impact on such varied facets of American life as love, food, art, the media, crime, work and culture
-- Automotive milestone timelines throughout the book
-- Profiles of the 100 most powerful and influential people in automotive history
 -- Statistics, including sales data
-- Photos of all surviving vehicles
To add to the celebration of the 100th anniversary, Automotive News has commissioned the production of a replica of the 1893 Duryea horseless buggy. A "tour" for the car is in the planning stages to allow as many people as possible the opportunity to view the vehicle.
Established in 1925, Automotive News is the leading weekly automotive industry trade publication in the United States and is a publication of Crain Communications, Inc. For more information on "America at the Wheel," call Michelle Minor at 313-446-6035.
