AUTOALLIANCE INTERNATIONAL WORKING TO IMPROVE ENVIRONMENT

FLAT ROCK, Mich., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- AutoAlliance International, producer of the Mazda MX-6, Ford Probe, and Mazda 626, announced numerous environmental improvements to its operations over the past year, including the results of efforts to recycle materials used in the manufacturing process.
 RECYCLING
During 1992, AutoAlliance recycled the following quantities of materials:
White Paper 37,500 pounds Recycled offsite
Paint Solvent 159,750 gallons Recycled offsite and reused
 Steel 23,921 tons Recycled offsite
Lead Batteries 1,080 pounds Recycled offsite
 Plastics 75,000 pounds Recycled offsite
 Corrugated 2,441 tons Recycled offsite
Oil 18,579 gallons Recycled offsite for fuel oil
 Aluminum 71 tons Recycled offsite
"We are constantly in search of ways to reduce our consumption of resources and to recycle the materials that we do use in the production process," said Environmental Professional Terence Filipiak. "When situations do not permit the reduction or elimination of the use of a given material, we always look for a way of recycling it."
 USING NEW HAZARD-FREE MATERIALS
AutoAlliance uses no production materials in its operations considered "extremely hazardous" as defined by the U.S.E.P.A. toxic release inventory reporting requirements. In addition, employees handling chemical or hazardous materials are trained in their use and disposal. In an effort to reduce or eliminate hazardous discharges from the plant, AutoAlliance has recently:
-- Introduced water-based coatings for its plastic interior parts painting operation, to replace solvent-based coatings. Emissions from this area of the plant have been reduced by more than 50 percent.
-- Adopted the use of sealing agents that are of low toxicity, reducing the usage of di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate by 98 percent and eliminating over 330,000 pounds of this toxic compound.
-- Replaced waxes used for vehicle shipping with low-VOC content wax, reducing emissions in this area by 15 tons per year.
 ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE TECHNOLOGY
The AutoAlliance plant, built eight years ago, has a number of technologies incorporated into the plant design to reduce or eliminate hazardous discharges:
-- Incinerators are installed on all paint bake ovens for the plant's solvent-based paint operations. The incinerators eliminate more than 90 percent of the solvent emitted in the drying process.
-- An onsite wastewater pretreatment facility is capable of processing 800,000 gallons per day.
-- State-of-the-art paint application equipment assures maximum transfer of paint solids to the car body surface, reducing solvent emissions and disposal of waste paint.
-- High solids paints, low in solvent content, are utilized to reduce solvent emission discharges to the outside air.
"At AutoAlliance, we continue to pursue the use of environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes," said Filipiak. "We are constantly evaluating the environmental impacts of the decisions we make -- understanding that our customers and our community expect and depend upon us to manage and care responsibly for the resources we consume in the manufacture of quality automobiles."
AutoAlliance International, Inc. is a joint venture between Mazda Motor Corporation and Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), and employs 3,600 people. The plant is a fully integrated manufacturing facility, with an onsite stamping, plastics and plastic paint operation in addition to final automobile assembly.
