AUTO-GAS SYSTEMS INC. AND GASCARD INC. ANNOUNCE ISLAND CARD-READER INTERFACE CERTIFICATION

CARLSBAD, Calif., Feb. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Auto-Gas Systems Inc. (AutoGas) of Abilene, Texas, a major supplier of automated fueling equipment, and Gascard Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: GSCD) (Gascard) of Carlsbad, the country's leading fleet fuel management company, today announced certification of the AutoGas Model AT2002 island cardreader for use in Gascard's national fueling network. AutoGas' Gascard- compatible island cardreader will now operate at any suitably equipped location in conjunction with Gascard's patented Distributed Authorization System (DAS).
Importantly, the AutoGas Model AT2002 island cardreader is compatible with many major point-of-sale (POS) networks and oil company credit card programs. It is also easy to use, maintain, and expand -- the petroleum marketer or a local equipment distributor can handle most service needs. With this interface, Gascard franchisees can now add new or upgrade existing AutoGas island cardreader sites to the Gascard network. Gascard's volume discounts and growth incentive credits will speed amortization of the investment in the new or upgraded island card-reader equipment.
Chris Gindorf, president of AutoGas, explains, "The capability to accept the Gascard fleetcard along with major oil company retail cardbases at the marketer's existing dispensers allows him to increase his fuel volumes by bringing a whole new customer set to his facility. AutoGas has a number of retail networks that may now be accepted concurrently with Gascard."
Gascard Manager, Customer Services, Mike Holly, adds, "Gascard franchisees currently use the AutoGas Model AT2002 to accept Gascard access cards in various combinations with Conoco, Sinclair and Texaco retail credit cards, Mastercard and Visa bankcards, and American Express and Discover cards. The first automated site on the Sinclair Fleet Fueling Network employs the AutoGas Model AT2002 to accept Sinclair Fleet Fueling and Gascard access cards. We also envision many Gascard franchisees automating existing countertop point-of-sale (POS) sites using AutoGas island cardreader equipment because of AutoGas's leadership in oil company interfaces and then using the POS equipment to add more sites to the Gascard network. Because the average automated Gascard site transacts five times as much volume as a POS site, both developments should increase the number of gallons processed and improve service to fleets."
 Background - Gascard Inc.
Gascard provides fuel management services to tens of thousands of commercial and government fleets that transact more than 16,000,000 gallons of fuel per month through almost 2,800 locations in 39 states. Since 1981 Gascard has transacted more than 1.2 billion gallons. The company has contracts to provide fuel management services for the California Energy Commission and the States of Delaware and Utah and to process a proprietary fleetcard for Sinclair Oil Corp. The Gascard network also has interchange agreements with ARCO's PayPoint and Sinclair's Fleet Fueling networks.
Gascard has developed and markets nationally a comprehensive card-activated fuel management system designed to reduce commercial and government fleet fueling costs. The Gascard system can prevent unauthorized purchases; lower accounting, administrative, and other costs of fleet fueling; and eliminate or lessen the environmental risks of underground fuel storage tank ownership or operation. Each billing cycle the Gascard system reports complete fleet fueling transaction data -- date, time, site, vehicle, driver, odometer, miles per gallon, cents per mile, product, volume, price, extension, and excise tax details -- which fleet managers can use to maximize fleet efficiency. Through Gascard's 127 franchisees, which are typically independent petroleum marketers, more than 500 salespeople market the Gascard system primarily to local and regional delivery, sales, and service fleets, such as fuel and beverage distributors, overnight package delivery services, taxis, public utilities, and government agencies.
Gascard was originally organized in May 1981 and went public through an offering of its common stock in March 1987. In January 1990 the U.S. Patent Office issued Patent No. 4,891,503 to Gascard for its Distributed Authorization System. This sophisticated database management program automatically maintains individualized subsets of Gascard's national database in local point-of-sale terminals which enables them to authorize and process transactions almost instantaneously without recourse to Gascard's central computer and thus at a greatly reduced telecommunications cost. Gascard's common stock is traded on the over-the-counter market.
