AUTO WORKER AGAIN MAKES LARGE UNCF CONTRIBUTION

DETROIT, Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Matel Dawson, a 71-year-old skilled tradesman at Ford Motor Co.'s Rouge plant Powerhouse No. 1, truly knows the feeling of giving.
As the largest individual contributor to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Michigan Telethon, Dawson has unselfishly taken his own savings for an investment in the future of black youth.
Dawson has donated $80,000 the last two years to the organization that raises money for distribution to 41 historically black private colleges and universities.
Dawson will match last year's contribution when he presents another $50,000 check to John E. Lobbia, Michigan general chairman of this year's UNCF campaign, at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday, Dec. 17). Lobbia is chairman and chief executive officer of The Detroit Edison Co.
Dawson, who lives an otherwise Spartan lifestyle, said he wants black youths to have more educational opportunities than he did while growing up in Shreveport, La.
