AUTO RACING CHAMPION EARNS TRADING CARD SPOT: DEWARE FEATURED IN 'DREAM MACHINE' SET

AUTO RACING CHAMPION EARNS TRADING CARD SPOT:
DEWARE FEATURED IN 'DREAM MACHINE' SET
QUINCY, Mass., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Scott Deware's face is all over the country -- and he couldn't be happier. The Quincy race driver has just captured the SCCA North Atlantic Road Racing Championship; beating a field of talented drivers throughout a series of 14 races. Not bad for a 30-year-old driver in only his first full year of professional auto racing!
To top it off, Deware's face and race cars are wrapped in silver foil and selling all over the country as part of the Lime Rock Dream Machines II, a 55-card trading set featuring racing vehicles, classic cars and restored street machines. "We included three cards in the set which featured Scott," says Lime Rock's Paul Carroll. "Even though he was a rookie driver, we had a feeling he was going to be a champion."
Deware has ambitions of being an Indy driver in the next few years; an accomplishment that would make him well-known nationally in the auto racing field. But celebrity is nothing new to Deware. For 12 years he has been known as a professional Formula One boat racer. Five times he has won the national championship and has consistently been ranked among the top 10 boat racers in the world. "The car is a new experience for me," says Deware. "It's like starting all over in racing for me." He hopes to move up to Formula 2000/Continental in 1993 with an eye on Indy in 1996.
"Right now, we're out drumming up the sponsorship money we need to crack the next plateau in auto racing," according to Deware. "If we get sufficient sponsorship, our crew will also run some of the NASCAR Grand National North events next year."
While winning the North Atlantic championship is a boost to Scott's career, it's also a potential boost to the trading cards as well. Two of the things that make trading cards valuable are the limited availability and the popularity of the subject. Lime Rock has always produced "limited edition" cards; after the initial printing the plates and negatives are destroyed to guarantee a limited number of cards. The increased attention to Deware provides the other factor in increasing value. While the cards can be had for less than a dollar a package right now, they can sometimes be resold later for much more.
Larry Bird is a recent example of appreciation. A three-card set of Larry Bird hologram cards produced by Lime Rock sold out quickly last winter for less than $20 a set. This year, after Bird retired from basketball and played in the Olympics, the value of those cards went through the roof. At a recent charity auction, Lime Rock donated sets of the Bird holograms which were auctioned for several hundred dollars per set to eager collectors.
"I don't know if anyone will ever wind up paying a lot of money for my face on a trading card," says Deware. "I'm just delighted these guys at Lime Rock had so much confidence in me."
