AUSTRALIAN COAL MINERS WALK OUT IN SUPPORT OF UMWA STRIKERS; AUSTRALIAN UNION CHIEF CITES 'HISTORY OF COOPERATION' BETWEEN MINEWORKER UNIONS

WASHINGTON, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- About 1,000 Australian miners walked off their jobs at approximately 6 p.m. EDT yesterday in support of striking members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA).
The Australians work at the Ravensworth and Warkworth mines operated and co-owned by Peabody Holding Company, a subsidiary of the British conglomerate Hanson PLC. The UMWA struck selected Peabody mines in the United States yesterday as part of its campaign against member companies of the Bituminous Coal Operators Association (BCOA). Over 9,000 miners in five states are currently on strike against Peabody and other coal companies.
"The UMWA and the United Mine Workers in Australia have a history of cooperation," said John Maitland, the president of the Australian miners' union. "The message to Peabody will be clear -- we don't want their industrial relations tactics in Australia, and we are disgusted with their actions in the USA. Mineworkers in Australia will maintain their solidarity with American mineworkers."
"We are honored that the Australian miners are standing with us in this struggle," UMWA President Richard L. Trumka said. "We hope Peabody and the other BCOA companies will take to heart this powerful statement of international solidarity. And we hope they'll understand that union miners in the U.S. are only fighting for what Australian miners already have -- job security and fair labor practices."
