AUSTIN'S SIGNS 35-RESTAURANT FRANCHISE AGREEMENT

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The recent signing of a binding letter of intent for franchising in the Republic of South Africa has put Austin's International Inc. (NASDAQ: AUST) on the globe for continued success with its restaurant business on an international scale.
According to Austin's founder and chief executive officer, Philip R. Connor, Jr., the franchise agreement paves the way for a December 1993 opening of an Austin's restaurant in the affluent, coastal resort town of George, between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Simultaneous plans for opening two restaurants in Cape Town are written into the agreement, with further joint venture expansion plans that will allow for the opening of 35 to 40 restaurant sites all over the Republic of South Africa within the next six years.
Attorneys for Austin's International and the South African parent company that will control the restaurant operations there are currently negotiating to make the terms of the contract compliant with South African laws and compatible with EEC regulations. On Aug. 20, principals from the South African parent company will come to Austin's Ft. Lauderdale headquarters to sign the final contract and undergo intensive training for operating the Texas-style rib, steak and seafood restaurants.
In accordance with the terms of the franchise agreement, Austin's International will receive 5 percent of the gross revenues from each restaurant location in South Africa. Connor said that indications from competitors in the restaurant business in South Africa show that Austin's restaurants can expect a potential US $2.5 to 3 million in volume per year from each location. Based on their 5 percent take of the gross, Austin's International will receive about $100,000 per year from each of the first three sites in George and Cape Town.
Closer to home, Austin's is preparing for the Sept. 29 opening of its new site in Orlando, Fla., on tourist-busy International Drive near the convention center. The fourth restaurant in the United States will open in Pembroke Pines, Fla., near Joe Robbie Stadium in late November.
