AUDI TO RECALL SOME 1985-1991 MODELS

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Audi of America, Inc. today announced that it will be notifying owners of some 1985 through 1991 Audi vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions to bring their cars to an authorized Audi dealership for a change of the lubricant oil in the drive train differential.
The service will be free of charge. Approximately 152,000 vehicles are involved.
Differential gear oil could be lost due to evaporation over time which could cause premature gear and bearing wear and, in extreme circumstances, block the vehicle's drive wheels, the company said.
Owners will be asked to bring their vehicle to their Audi dealer to have the present oil replaced with an advanced design synthetic lubricant.
Audi is aware of four accidents arising from wheel lockup. Two of them involved minor personal injuries.
In a separate action, Audi of America, Inc. will recall approximately 7,000 1992 model Audi 100 vehicles to modify the brake vacuum booster system. The company said that the blades in the vacuum booster pump could prematurely wear, resulting in diminished brake pedal assist. The modification will also be free of charge to owners.
Audi of America, Inc. has not received any report that the brake pedal assist has actually failed. The potential weakness was uncovered during normal warranty work.
