AUDI QUATTRO SALES HIT 50,000 IN U.S.
/Repeat to correct garble in third graf of Thursday transmission/ AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. sales of Audi's luxury all-wheel-drive Quattro models have surpassed 50,000 units, Audi of America announced today. Introduced in 1982, Quattro models have accounted for up to 30 percent of Audi's annual U.S. sales, the company said. "Quattro gives Audi a unique personality," said Gerd Klauss, vice president in charge of Audi of America. "Only Audi in the import luxury segment offers the safety and performance characteristics of full-time, all-wheel-drive across its entire range of cars. "In 1992, we made these advantages available to a broader range of buyers by coupling the all-wheel-drive Quattro system with automatic transmissions in our higher volume 100 models," Klauss said. Audi all-wheel-drive models include the 90 CS Quattro Sport, the 100 CS Quattro sedan and wagon, the high-performance S4 sports sedan, and the luxury flagship V8 Quattro. Audi Quattros have achieved notable racing successes capturing the 1983 drivers' world rally championship, the 1984 manufacturers' and drivers' world rally championships, the 1985 Hong Kong-Peking Rally, the 1987 Safari Rally in Kenya, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 1985, '86 and '87, the 1988 U.S. Trans-Am manufacturers' and drivers' trophies, and the 1990 and 1991 German Touring Car Championships. Audi's Quattro system powers all four wheels all the time, minimizing wheel spin by allocating torque to the wheels with the surest traction. A center differential distributes torque between front and rear wheels from the usual 50/50 ratio to a maximum 75/25 percent split on 90, 100 and S4 models, and a maximum 0/100 percent split on the V8 Quattro. The Quattro's active safety system is complemented by airbags and Audi's front-seat belt-tensioning system. -0- 3/12/93 /CONTACT: Patrick Fitzgerald of Audi Public Relations, 313-340-5104/
