AUDI, JOURNALIST IN LOS ANGELES ON GLOBAL FUEL ECONOMY RUN
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Aiming to achieve 59 miles per gallon on a 25,000-mile drive around the world in a diesel- powered Audi, Austrian journalist Gerhard Plattner expects to pass through Los Angeles on Friday, Aug. 14.
Plattner began his journey at Audi AG headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, on July 27, with a goal of achieving 59 mpg at an average speed of 50 miles per hour in the direct injection, turbocharged diesel Audi 80 TDI.
The Audi 80 TDI's engine injects diesel fuel directly into the combustion chamber in the pistons, providing a 20-percent improvement in fuel economy over diesel engines using indirect injection with a separate swirl chamber or pre-chamber.
Emissions are restricted by an all-electronic engine management system, an air flow meter, electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation, an oxidizing catalyst and fine tuning of the entire engine management system.
In cooperation with the German auto magazine "Auto Bild," Audi and Plattner are demonstrating the fuel economy and low emissions attributes of the Audi 80 TDI in everyday driving conditions on a variety of road surfaces.
By the time Plattner arrives in Los Angeles, he will have traveled to Bangkok, Singapore and Sydney. From Los Angeles, he drives to Vancouver, Canada, and on to New York, where he plans to arrive on Aug. 28 before crossing the Atlantic to Europe.
Plattner's nearly two-month world tour is scheduled to end in mid-September in Milan, Italy.
