In conjunction with the American University in Dubai (AUD), CISCO Networking Academy program conducted its first instructor event on the 11th and 12th of March 2009 at the AUD Auditorium. The conference touched on everything one needs to stay ahead as a CISCO Academy instructor and manager. It also provided an opportunity to learn about changes to the Networking Academy program and its evolution and to retrain as well as interact peer to peer with other instructors and CISCO Experts.

"The relationship our IT Program has with the CISCO Academy has provided a lot of necessary industrial exposure for our IT networking students. This relationship is a model that we would like to see replicated across other computing fields", comments Dr. Khalid Khawaja, Chair of the Information Technology Department at the American University in Dubai.

According to Mr. Mu'men Suliman, Area Academy Manager at Cisco Networking Academy: "It was a great chance for all the NetAcad community to stay updated with the curriculum changes, listen to the Cisco certification updates, interact with Cisco experts, network & socialize with other Cisco academy peers from different counties".

The main focus of the conference was to provide program updates of the new curricula, including technical updates; to raise and maintain the quality of instruction by offering quality technical retooling sessions to instructors; to provide guidance to Academies in effectively managing the business of their Academy Workforce; to encourage development and Student Advocacy; to provide training in the use of new or updated tools such as Packet Tracer, Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Security; to provide instructors with an exposure to future trends in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education; and to enhance the Human Network, exchange ideas, and socialize and network with peer instructors from other academies in the Middle East and North African region. Since September 2006, the IT department at the American University Dubai has been the local Networking Academy with a fully equipped on campus CISCO lab. The Networking Academy program utilizes a blended learning model integrating face-to-face teaching with a challenging web-based material/curriculum, hands-on lab exercises, and Internet-based assessment. Networking concentration graduates that also graduate the Cisco Academy are equipped with the proper theoretic and practical knowledge for networking and IT-related careers in the public and private sectors, as well as higher education programs in engineering, computer science and related fields.

During our introduction to network classes, students learn about the fundamentals of computer networks and have the opportunity to study specific technologies that are popular in the market and are endorsed by CISCO labs available on campus. Then, advanced courses related to CISCO routers, switches and WAN are offered. Upon passing and completing these courses, students would be eligible for sitting in for the CISCO CCNA-1, CCNA-2, CCNA-3, and CCNA-4 exams. Students who pass AUD subjects and CISCO exams would be granted CCNA certifications that are valuable to working in the market place.
