The American University of Beirut announced today the appointment of Richard J.

Brow as Vice President for University Advancement effective October 10, 2010.

He will oversee all aspects of fundraising, alumni relations, marketing, and communications.

Brow was most recently with University of the Arts London (UAL), where he was Director of Communications and Development.

Stephen Jeffrey, the current Vice President for Development and External Relations, is retiring after 30 years in academia, the last nine of which were spent at AUB.

"Richard brings to AUB years of development experience in challenging academic environments and, with his experience in international settings, is ideally prepared to lead an advancement team that can maximize AUB's aspirations in the areas of fundraising, alumni relations, communications, and public outreach," said President Peter Dorman.

At UAL, Europe's largest university specialising in the arts, Brow was responsible for the strategic management of development, communications, and alumni relations -- areas that included institutional branding, publicity, web presence, media relations and public outreach.

During his seven year tenure, he oversaw the rebranding of the university and the development of an international alumni program that grew from 7,000 to more than 150,000 members.

"This is an exciting time to be joining AUB -- the educational environment in the Middle East is rapidly changing and there are unprecedented challenges and opportunities facing the university sector internationally.

AUB has a remarkable history, and benefits from a unique global reputation and distinct advantages that can be further strengthened through an enhanced advancement operation.

AUB has a strong track record in attracting philanthropic support, and has established an impressive team in alumni relations, fundraising and communications.

I am looking forward to joining them in Beirut, and to working with AUB's leadership, academic staff and other colleagues.

"Prior to UAL, Brow held positions at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he headed individual giving during the Campaign for LSE, and at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where he was Head of the Development Office.

He also worked at The Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia as Middle East Program Coordinator, and was a consultant on various Middle East-related educational and philanthropic initiatives.

Originally from Canada, Brow received his BA in Political Science from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec and his MA in Middle East Area Studies (Major in Economics) from SOAS.
