ATTACHMATE AND NOVELL SIGN JOINT DEVELOPMENT/MARKETING PACT

BELLEVUE, Wash., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Attachmate Corp. announced today that it has entered into a joint development, marketing and licensing agreement with Novell Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: NOVL) The new partnership was formed to provide solutions to Fortune 500 NetWare accounts who need enterprise-wide connectivity.
 Agreement Overview
Under the agreement, Attachmate will acquire all Novell 3270 desktop software and continue to market it through the Novell reseller channel. Attachmate also will develop add-on NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs) to Novell's NetWare for SAA host integration platform to leverage the client-host intelligence of its own EXTRA! desktop products. In addition, Attachmate and Novell will work together on messaging and scheduling projects, including the definition of calendar/scheduling APIs for workgroup scheduling.
"We are very pleased to be working more closely with Novell," said Wayne Smith, president and chief executive officer of Attachmate. "Through this partnership, we can provide our customers with tighter integration between the desktop, NetWare and the host -- and back it up with unified support from both companies."
Kanwal Rekhi, executive vice president from Novell, agrees. "Both Novell and Attachmate have become number one in their respective markets by paying attention to their customers. This partnership enables us to offer customers better solutions and support than would be possible by working alone."
 Attachmate Acquires 3270 Software
As part of the agreement, Attachmate will assume all responsibility for marketing and support of Novell's desktop 3270 software, including NetWare 3270 LAN Workstation for DOS, NetWare 3270 LAN Workstations for Windows, NetWare 3270 LAN Workstation for Macintosh and NetWare 3270 Vector Graphics Option. Attachmate also will provide ongoing development and future enhancements for these products.
All of these products will continue to carry the NetWare name and be sold through Novell's network of Gold and Platinum Resellers. Technical support will transfer to Attachmate as of Sept. 1, 1993. "Novell has built a very loyal base of customers and resellers and our first priority is to make this transition as transparent to the channel and customers as possible," said Smith. "Over time, we will be strengthening these relationships with innovative product support, education and marketing programs, all focused on enterprise-wide NetWare connectivity."
Attachmate To Develop NLMs for NetWare for SAA
Attachmate will develop NetWare Loadable Modules for Novell's NetWare for SAA software, designed to provide tighter integration with the client-host intelligence within Attachmate's high-end EXTRA! desktop products. "Over 70 percent of our customers run NetWare and we intend to leverage the strength of EXTRA! in this environment," said Smith. Since its introduction, NetWare for SAA has become the industry's leading NetWare-to-host integration platform due to its extended feature set and tight coupling with Novell's network operating system technology.
 ZIP!Office To Run as NLM
Novell will assist Attachmate in implementing ZIP!Office, Attachmate's network-based e-mail and scheduling system, as a NetWare Loadable Module on a Novell server. ZIP!Office provides full cross- system calendar and e-mail integration with IBM's host-based PROFS and OfficeVision/VM systems. The NLM version of ZIP!Office will integrate with NetWare Global MHS and support the most current level of Novell's MHS API (Standard Message Format version 71) and utilize the communications services of NetWare for SAA.
 New Calendar/Scheduling Services
Novell and Attachmate will work together to develop new calendar/scheduling services between NetWare Global MHS and IBM's PROFS and OfficeVision. In conjunction with these new services, the two companies will work together with the MHS Alliance to define and implement calendar/scheduling APIs. These APIs will provide the foundation to enable the full array of office applications supplied by MHS partners to access enterprise-wide scheduling services such as PROFS and OfficeVision.
The new APIs will support both message-based and real-time calendar operations and will build upon initiatives currently underway within both companies. Currently, there are no industry-standard APIs available for such operations.
