ATTACHMATE'S NEW EXTRA! EXTENDED FOR DOS ADDS MAJOR ENHANCEMENTS TO MAINFRAME CONNECTIVITY

-- New Version Supports IBM NetView, Improves Remote Notebook Access
and Integrates Advanced Scripting Capabilities --
WASHINGTON, April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Attachmate Corp. announced today that it has added significant enhancements to EXTRA! Extended for DOS, the industry's best selling DOS-based mainframe connectivity software. Version 3.0 provides direct workstation support for IBM's NetView, new high-efficiency remote access, a fully integrated scripting capability and further streamlining of memory consumption.
"We remain committed to our DOS customers, even though our Windows product has become the leading connectivity software worldwide," said Stuart Lisk, product marketing manager for Attachmate. "At a time when many vendors have shifted their resources away from DOS, we are adding major new functionality to EXTRA! Extended in direct response to customer requests."
 IBM NetView Support
EXTRA! Extended for DOS 3.0 now links directly to NetView, IBM's host-based network monitoring and control software. Using NetView, a network administrator can centrally access the Response Time Monitor (RTM) with EXTRA! Extended to measure end-user response at the desktop. EXTRA! will also automatically forward NetView Events and Alerts that report user activity on the host, along with information about network transmission errors.
EXTRA! Extended goes a step further by extending NetView support to individual workstations. Most NetView reporting occurs from a "hub" such as a 3270 controller or LAN gateway. With SDLC and 802.2 connections, however, these hubs are not used. EXTRA! Extended is the only product to provide NetView reporting for these stand-alone workstations.
 Mainframe Access from the Road
The proliferation of notebook and laptop computers has fueled the need for people to access the mainframe from remote locations, and EXTRA! Extended 3.0 adds new capability for remote access. Through a protocol developed by Attachmate, users can dial into the mainframe using standard async modems and retain full SNA functionality at their remote workstations. In this way, they can run not only a full complement of 3270 functions, including graphics, but also client/host applications that rely on industry standard 3270 APIs like EHLLAPI.
Remote access to the mainframe is controlled by Attachmate's 3270 Gateway, which allows multiple users to simultaneously access the host at speeds of up to 19,200 bits per second. Users can dial in using standard telephone lines, or may use X.25 packet-switched networks. Attachmate's remote protocol is particularly well suited for packet networks because it eliminates non-productive polling, significantly lowering costs in "pay-per-byte" public networks.
 Integrated Scripting for Client/Host Applications
EXTRA! Extended 3.0 integrates the run-time version of Attachmate's NOW! Autoware product, a robust high-level scripting program that allows automated access to host information. Formerly a $195 product, the NOW! module runs programs written in the NOW! Autoware scripting language, eliminating the confusing screens and cumbersome procedures inherent to the mainframe.
The process of transferring files, for example, is simplified using the new version of EXTRA! Extended. A special NOW! program has been included that provides extended point/click features like concurrent two-way transfers, unattended transfers and predefined lists of files for transfer.
"EXTRA! Extended proves you don't necessarily need an environment like Windows or OS/2 to create client/host applications," commented Lisk. "Using NOW!, many of our customers have quickly created desktop applications that automatically access the mainframe and get the information they need. The user doesn't have to know where to find the data or how to get it. Best of all, it works just fine on a `286."
 Improved Memory Management
Although the new version of EXTRA! Extended has many new capabilities, system memory usage has actually declined up to 15 percent. The program also takes advantage of several memory optimizing techniques, including support for third-party memory managers, reduced- memory configurations and the use of expanded memory. EXTRA! Extended is fully compatible with DOS 6.0
 Other Enhancements
Inactivity Timeout: Allows the user to preset a timer that will automatically disconnect from the host after a period of inactivity to save connect-time charges.
Host Mail Notification: Notifies users when new mail arrives on host-based e-mail systems like PROFS and OfficeVision.
Dual-Mode APL Displays: IBM's APL characters can now be displayed in text-mode, which is faster and consumes less memory.
 Pricing and Availability
EXTRA! Extended for DOS will ship by the end of April and carries a list price of U.S. $425. Customers using previous versions of EXTRA! can upgrade for $75. International pricing varies.
