ATMOS ENERGY REQUESTS RATE INCREASE

 ATMOS ENERGY REQUESTS RATE INCREASE
DALLAS, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmos Energy Corporation (NYSE: ATO)

announced today that it has filed to increase annual revenues by approximately $4.4 million, or 12 percent, in its Amarillo, Texas, natural gas distribution system.
The proposed effective date is March 17, 1992. About 60,500 customers are affected.
The company's last burner-tip rate adjustment in Amarillo was in December 1985. Atmos implemented $4.9 million of rate increases in late 1991 for most of its West Texas service area, excluding burner-tip rates in Amarillo. The company also has a $3.4 million annual rate increase request pending before the Louisiana Public Service Commission.
"The company continues to evaluate its rates in all of its service areas. The increases implemented in our West Texas and Kentucky service areas in 1991 are expected to have a positive impact on our 1992 earnings," said Charles K. Vaughan, Atmos chairman, president and chief executive officer.
The company has worked to manage its costs and to operate efficiently, Vaughan said. Even with the proposed increase, rates for natural gas service in Amarillo would remain among the lowest in the state.
The City of Amarillo may suspend implementation of the rates until June 15, 1992. The company and the city have the right to appeal to the Railroad Commission of Texas.
Atmos Energy Corporation of Dallas provides natural gas service to more than one-half million customers in West Texas, Louisiana and Kentucky through its operating companies -- Energas Company, Trans Louisiana Gas Company and Western Kentucky Gas Company.
