ATMOS ENERGY CORPORATION ANNOUNCES IMPROVED RESULTS

ATMOS ENERGY CORPORATION ANNOUNCES IMPROVED RESULTS
DALLAS, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmos Energy Corporation (NYSE: ATO)

today reported net income of $8.4 million, or $1.22 per share, on operating revenues of $116.1 million for its second fiscal quarter ended March 31, 1992. These results compare with net income of $8.0 million earned in the previous year's second quarter, or $1.19 per share, on operating revenues of $124.4 million.
The company said heating sales for the quarter were reduced by weather that was 5 percent warmer than the previous year, and more than 17 percent warmer than normal. The company also had a decrease in volumes of gas sold in its agricultural market in West Texas for fueling irrigation pumps, because of a wetter than normal winter.
Volumes of natural gas sold and transported by the company during the second quarter totaled 35.9 billion cubic feet (Bcf), compared with 38.6 Bcf during the second quarter a year ago.
For the six months ended March 31, 1992, Atmos reported increased net income of $13.1 million, or $1.92 per share on 6.8 million average shares outstanding. Operating revenues for this period were $222.8 million. This compares with net income of $11.7 million, or $1.82 per share on 6.4 million average shares outstanding, for the six months ended March 31, 1991. Operating revenues for the 1991 period were $220.5 million. Volumes of gas sold and transported for the current six-month period were 68.5 Bcf, compared with 69.2 Bcf during the same period last year.
"We were optimistic at the beginning of the fiscal year that with rate increases and the prospects for a return to more normal weather the company would see a greater improvement in earnings. However, the combination of extremely warm winter weather and wet weather in West Texas has limited the positive impact of rate increases implemented in most of the company's Texas service area and in Kentucky this quarter. The company continues to work to soften the effect of expense increases, although some expense increases are inevitable," said Atmos Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Charles Vaughan.
Vaughan added that during the winter heating season, the company served a record high of 540,565 customers.
A $4.4 million rate increase request is pending for the company's Amarillo, Texas, distribution system. The city of Amarillo has postponed action until June, and the company has the ability to appeal the city's ruling to the Railroad Commission of Texas. A $3.4 million rate increase request is also pending for the company's Louisiana service territory. The company continues to evaluate its rates of return in its other service areas as well.
"The long-term prospects for natural gas are promising. Natural gas will play a major role in solving the nation's environmental and energy security problems. The company's strategies for growth include not only internal growth programs, but the pursuit of additional acquisitions and development of new markets such as natural gas as a vehicle fuel," Vaughan said.
The board of directors of Atmos today declared a $.31 per share regular quarterly dividend on the company's common stock to be paid on June 10, 1992, to shareholders of record on May 26, 1992.
Atmos Energy Corporation provides natural gas service to more than one-half million customers in Texas, Louisiana and Kentucky through its operating companies - Energas Company, Trans Louisiana Gas Company and Western Kentucky Gas Company.
