ATLANTIS SUBMARINES TO BEGIN SERVICE IN THE BAHAMAS -- START UP DATE SCHEDULED FOR JULY 1

NASSAU, Bahamas, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- New Providence Island, Bahamas, with its spirited city of Nassau, has long been known as an exciting tourist destination, with its old world charm, dazzling casinos and colorful Bahamian island heritage. Yet, one of the destination's greatest treasures, its vibrant undersea life, has only been accessible to those with SCUBA certification.
But that will soon change. Atlantis plans to start up its next submarine operation in the Bahamas on July 1, increasing the company's fleet to 10 subs worldwide -- five of those found in Caribbean waters.
The 28-passenger sub earmarked for the Bahamas is actually Atlantis I, the world's first passenger submarine. The premier vessel was launched off the coast of Grand Cayman in 1985, where it operated until February 1992. Since February, Atlantis has been refitting the sub and preparing it for its station on New Providence Island. The new location will operate out of the secluded white beaches of West Bay adjacent to Lyford Cay.
"This site offers the ideal environment for Atlantis," said Stuart Mailer, site development and operations manager for the new location. "The abundance of marine life is incredible, and with all the shipwrecks and unique coral formations found off this island, the dive experience for passengers aboard the Atlantis should be nothing short of spectacular."
The sub's dive site will be found among the dramatic walls and drop offs leading to the world famous "Tongue of the Ocean," a massive mile-deep canyon described as an indentation of the Atlantic Ocean Basin. From Disney's classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" to more recent hits, such as "Cocoon" and "Jaws -- The Revenge," filmmakers have continually chosen the area surrounding the island to film their subaquatic scenes. The site of the underwater shooting for the James Bond adventure "Thunderball" is still marked by a giant film prop. The mock-up of an Air Force bomber now serves as home for numerous gorgonian sea fans.
Atlantis Submarines are found in eight locations worldwide: Aruba, Barbados, St. Thomas, Grand Cayman, Guam, Lahaina-Maui, Kona and Waikiki, where two subs operate out of Hilton Hawaiian Village. Expansion plans include placing Atlantis Submarines in Mexico and in additional Caribbean destinations.
