ATLANTIS PLANS WORLD'S LARGEST PASSENGER SUBMARINE AS PART OF MASSIVE HAWAIIAN EXPANSION PROGRAM

HONOLULU, Nov. 24 ~PRNewswire~ -- In a major move to expand its Hawaiian operations into the 21st century, Atlantis Submarines, Hawaii announced today that it will launch the world's largest passenger submersible into island waters in late 1993.
The new 64-passenger, 150-ton sub was designated by Rick Shafer, president of Atlantis Submarines Hawaii L.P., as only one component in an expansion program dubbed "Project: Aloha 2000." According to Shafer, this plan to launch Atlantis into the 21st century represents a massive marketing and investment commitment made by Atlantis to its Hawaiian locations and the state's growth in tourism-related businesses.
"The design and construction of the larger sub will be the first in a series of new product developments," said Shafer. "Additional Atlantis product and service enhancements will continue to support the company's growth and position as the leading innovator~operator in the submersible business."
Reaching 96 feet in length and 15 feet in width, the new sub will increase Hawaii's current fleet to five submarines and the daily passenger capacity to nearly 3,000 seats per day. These Atlantis Submarines, which dive as far as 150 feet below the ocean's surface, provide locals and visitors alike with their only opportunity to dive aboard a real submarine. Although the exact site of the larger sub has yet to be determined, it has been established that it will operate out of one of the current island locations: Kona, Lahaina- Maui, or Waikiki's Hilton Hawaiian Village.
As the founder and leader of the passenger submersible industry, Atlantis recently entered the first phase of "Project: Aloha 2000" which applies the knowledge it has gained from operating subs globally for more than seven years. The greatly increased size of the new sub, which will be nearly 85 percent larger than the existing model, reflects not only increased capacity but also added spaciousness and comfort for those on board. From a design standpoint, it will appear more streamlined, high-tech and futuristic, and viewports will be greatly enlarged for a more panoramic experience.
Initial plans also call for a multilanguage audio system and a video system connected to external cameras, which will offer passengers an even closer view of the area's diverse marine life.
"Atlantis is in a fortunate position to undertake this project," stated Shafer. "Not only do we have a strong relationship with Hawaii's travel industry, but as the industry leader, we are also able to draw from a strong international network of operations and experience."
Atlantis launched the world's first passenger submarine into the waters off Grand Cayman in 1985. Continually expanding its international base, Atlantis has grown to include not only Hawaii and Grand Cayman but also St. Thomas, Barbados, Aruba and Guam. To date, the worldwide fleet has carried more than 2 million passengers up to 150 feet below the waves on more than 65,000 dives, and plans for expansion include looking into sites in Saipan, the Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico.
