ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES PASSENGER TRAFFIC UP 38.5 PERCENT IN JUNE
WASHINGTON, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlantic Coast Airlines, which operates as United Express, today reported preliminary passenger traffic figures for the month of June which show a 38.5 percent increase in passenger traffic as compared to June 1991. For the second month in a row, Atlantic Coast Airlines posted company records in revenue passenger miles (RPMs), available seat miles (ASMs), and number of passengers carried.
In June, the United Express carrier flew 20,428,000 RPMs, a 38.5 percent increase over the 14,750,000 logged in June of last year. The airline's ASMs rose 18.3 percent, reaching 39,511,000, up from the 33,393,000 posted last year. The load factor increased 7.5 percentage points, from 44.2 percent in June 1991 to the 51.7 recorded this past month. Atlantic Coast Airlines carried 73,737 passengers during June, a 33.5 percent increase over the 55,237 carried during the same month last year.
Commenting on the preliminary traffic results, Kerry Skeen, chief operating officer of Atlantic Coast Airlines, said, "The most encouraging aspect of the June results is that the load factor remained strong despite the substantial capacity increase, as we integrated five more British Aerospace Jetstream 32 aircraft into the fleet. Atlantic Coast Airlines also continues to benefit from United Airlines' growing trans-Atlantic presence by connecting an increasing number of passengers to United's international departures." United Airlines offers non-stop service to six European cities from Washington Dulles, most recently inaugurating service to Milan, Italy, with continuing service to Rome.
Year-to-date statistics for Atlantic Coast Airlines show that RPMs have increased 21.2 percent, totaling 92,657,000 during the first six months of 1992, vs. 76,459,000 posted during the same period in 1991. ASMs reached 217,683,000, a 26.6 percent increase over 1991's 171,966,000. The resulting year-to-date load factor is 42.6 percent for 1992, vs. 44.5 percent in 1991. Atlantic Coast Airlines has carried 337,760 passengers, a 16.0 percent increase over last year's 261,195 for the first six months.
At a news conference held yesterday at Newburgh, N.Y.'s Stewart International Airport, Atlantic Coast Airlines announced that it would begin service between Stewart and Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Sept. 1, 1992. The flights will be the first scheduled international service from the rapidly growing Newburgh airport, and will market the first entry into the Canadian marketplace by Atlantic Coast Airlines. The three daily round trips will be operated with the airline's 30-passenger Embraer Brasilia aircraft. Toronto will be the 40th destination served by the United Express carrier.
Atlantic Coast Airlines operates as United Express through a comprehensive marketing agreement with United Airlines. The two airlines closely coordinate flight schedules to provide passengers with convenient connections to destinations across the country and around the world from their hub at Washington Dulles International Airport. Atlantic Coast Airlines operates a fleet of 34 aircraft -- 22 British Aerospace Jetstream 32s, and 12 Embraer Brasilia 120s. At Washington Dulles, the United Express carrier operates 116 daily departures, the most of any airline, to 38 East Coast destinations. Systemwide, Atlantic Coast operates 261 daily departures to 39 cities. For each flight on United Express passengers receive 500 miles credit in United Airlines popular Mileage Plus frequent flyer program.
Atlantic Coast Airlines is a privately held company based in Sterling, Va.
