ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES PASSENGER TRAFFIC INCREASES 81.7 PERCENT IN AUGUST

STERLING, Va., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlantic Coast Airlines (NASDAQ-NMS: ACAI), which operates as United Express, reported that its passenger traffic increased 81.7 percent in August, according to preliminary results released today. The carrier's traffic, as measured in revenue

passenger miles (RPMs), rose from 22,249,000 in August of last year to 40,423,000 this past month. The airline's capacity, available seat miles (ASMs), increased 101.2 percent, from 41,331,000 to 83,175,000. Load factor, the percentage of available seats filled, declined 5.2 percentage points, from 53.8 percent to 48.6 percent. Atlantic Coast Airlines carried 152,200 passengers in August 1993, 94.9 percent more than the 78,089 carried during the same month last year.
For the first eight months of 1993, Atlantic Coast Airlines' RPMs have increased 74.3 percent, from 137,173,000 to 239,077,000, while ASMs have risen 69.8 percent, from 304,883,000 to 517,791,000. The carrier's load factor for the first eight months has increased 1.2 percentage points, reaching 46.2 percent vs. 45.0 percent last year. Atlantic Coast Airlines has carried 893,835 passengers thus far in 1993 as compared to 489,775 in 1992, an 82.5 percent increase.
Commenting on the preliminary results, Kerry Skeen, president of Atlantic Coast Airlines, said: "We ended a busy summer travel season with a month that saw ACA carry more passengers than in any other month in company history. Throughout the summer, as United's build-up of their European gateway continued, with the addition of flights to Glasgow, Zurich and Amsterdam, ACA benefited from the expanded number of connecting opportunities at the Washington Dulles hub." Skeen continued, adding, "Obviously, the decline in the load factor is attributable to last year's industry-wide fare discounting, which noticeably inflated passenger traffic."
Atlantic Coast Airlines, based in Sterling, is a publicly-traded company which recently completed an initial public offering of company stock. It has operated as United Express since December 1989, when service began with six aircraft and six cities from Washington Dulles. Today, Atlantic Coast Airlines serves 56 cities in 19 states and the District of Columbia. The airline operates with a hub at Washington Dulles International Airport, where it offers 155 daily departures, the most of any airline. Atlantic Coast Airlines also maintains a significant presence in Newark and Orlando. Its fleet comprises 61 aircraft; 30 British Aerospace Jetstream Super 31s; 13 Embraer Brasilia 120s; five deHavilland Dash-8 100 series; seven deHavilland Dash-8 300 series; and six British Aerospace Jetstream 41s, with 11 more scheduled for delivery over the next 17 months. Throughout its system, the United Express carrier operates 442 daily departures, for which passengers receive valuable mileage credit in United Airlines' popular Mileage Plus frequent flyer program.
