ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES PASSENGER TRAFFIC INCREASES 80.0 PERCENT IN MAY

WASHINGTON, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlantic Coast Airlines, which operates as United Express, today reported an 80.0 percent increase in passenger traffic for the month of May 1993. The carrier also reported year-to-date traffic figures for the first five months of 1993.
Passenger traffic for Atlantic Coast Airlines, as measured in revenue passenger miles (RPMs), rose 80.0 percent, from 19,202,000, to 34,559,000, as compared to May 1992. The United Express carrier's capacity, available seat miles (ASMs), increased 104.7 percent, from 36,155,000 to 74,007,000. The airline's load factor, the percentage of available seats filled, declined 6.4 percentage points, from 53.1 percent to 46.7 percent. Atlantic Coast Airlines carried 133,007 passengers in May vs. 67,568 during the same month last year, a 96.8 percent increase.
For the first five months of 1993, Atlantic Coast Airlines' RPMs have increased 68.9 percent, from 72,804,000 to 122,990,000, while ASMs have gained 54.3 percent, from 179,580,000, to 277,062,000, resulting in a 3.9 percentage point rise in the airline's load factor. Atlantic Coast Airlines has carried 452,082 passengers in 1993, 71.1 percent more than the 264,209 passengers carried during the first five months of 1992.
"We are very pleased with our passenger traffic growth in May," said Kerry Skeen, president of Atlantic Coast Airlines. "While the load factor declined, we were not subject to the same deep fare discounting that characterized last summer and helped push passenger traffic to record levels," Skeen added.
Employee-owned Atlantic Coast Airlines is based in Sterling, Va. It has operated as United Express since December 1989, when service began with six aircraft and six destinations. Today, Atlantic Coast Airlines serves 54 cities in 19 states and the District of Columbia. The airline operates with a hub at Washington Dulles International Airport, where it offers 153 daily departures, the most of any airline. The United Express carrier also maintains a significant presence in Newark, Orlando, Fla., and Miami. Its fleet is comprised of 57 aircraft -- 30 British Aerospace Jetstream Super 31s, 13 Embraer Brasilia 120s, five deHavilland Dash-8 100 series, seven deHavilland Dash-8 300 series and two British Aerospace Jetstream 41s, with deliveries for 15 more scheduled over the next 22 months.
