ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES PASSENGER TRAFFIC INCREASES 57.0 PERCENT IN FEBRUARY

WASHINGTON, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlantic Coast Airlines, which operates as United Express, today released preliminary passenger traffic statistics for the month of February which show the carrier's significant gains over the same period last year. Year-to- date totals for 1993, also released today, reflect the company's growth vs. the first two months of last year.
For the month of February, the United Express carrier's revenue passenger miles (RPMs) increased 57.0 percent, while capacity, available seat miles (ASMs), rose 23.9 percent, resulting in a 9.0 percentage point gain in the airline's load factor vs. the same month last year. ASM total for Atlantic Coast Airlines reached 40,715,000, up 23.9 percent from 32,852,000 operated in February 1992. RPMs rose to 17,470,000, a 57.0 percent increase over the 11,126,000 posted last February. The United Express carrier's load factor, the percentage of available seats filled, increased to 42.9 percent from 33.9 percent. Atlantic Coast Airlines carried 62,417 passengers during the month, 47.2 percent more than the 42,394 passengers carried in February 1992.
In February, Atlantic Coast Airlines dramatically increased its service to six Northeastern markets from Washington Dulles, including: Newark, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Rochester, Manchester and Providence. United Express also continued to develop Newark in February, adding four daily round trips to both Syracuse and Manchester, bringing total daily departures to 24. That number will grow to 27 departures on May 1, when United Express begins service to Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth, N.H., the nation's newest commercial airport.
Commenting on February's results, Kerry Skeen, president of Atlantic Coast Airlines, said: "The February statistics, which reflect the restructuring of the United Airlines hub at Washington Dulles, are very encouraging. The significant increase in passenger traffic can be largely attributed to our expanding flying in the Northeast and the strengthening of United's international connecting complex at Washington Dulles."
The year-to-date also reflects the company's continued pattern of growth during the first two months of 1993. Atlantic Coast Airlines has operated 19.1 percent more ASMs this year, reaching 80,943,000, up from 67,949,000. RPMs have increased 50.9 percent, from 22,532,000 in 1992 to 34,008,000 thus far in 1993. The airline has carried 122,042 passengers, 42.1 percent more than the 85,881 passengers carried during the same period in 1992. Load factor for the year has gained 8.8 percentage points, reaching 42.0 percent.
Employee-owned Atlantic Coast Airlines is based in Sterling, Va. It has operated as United Express since December 1989 when it began with six aircraft flying to six cities. As of April 1, with the start of the Florida operation and the addition of Dash-8 flights, Atlantic Coast Airlines will serve 55 cities in 19 states and the District of Columbia. The airline will operate with a hub at Washington Dulles International Airport and significant operations in Newark, Orlando and Miami. Its fleet will consist of 53 aircraft -- 28 British Aerospace Jetstream Super 31s, 13 Embraer Brasilia 120s, five deHavilland Dash-8 100 series, and seven deHavilland Dash-8 300 series. Systemwide, Atlantic Coast Airlines will operate a total of 447 daily departures. On April 1, United Express will operate 158 daily departures from the Washington Dulles hub, the most of any airline.
