 ATLANTIC COAST AIRLINES PASSENGER TRAFFIC
 INCREASES 46.2 PERCENT IN SEPTEMBER
WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlantic Coast Airlines, which operates as United Express, today reported significant gains in available seat miles (ASMs), revenue passenger miles (RPMs), passengers boarded and load factor in September as compared to the same month last year.
According to the preliminary figures released today, the United Express carrier operated 40,071,000 ASMs in September, a 16.7 percent increase over the 34,341,000 operated in September 1991. Atlantic Coast Airlines' RPMs rose to 19,928,000, a 46.2 percent increase over the 13,631,000 flown in September 1991. The resulting load factor increased 10.0 percentage points, from 39.7 percent in September 1991 to 49.7 percent this past month. Atlantic Coast Airlines carried 72,750 passengers in September, 42.5 percent more than the 51,060 carried in the same month last year.
Passenger traffic results for the first nine months of 1992 also show gains over the first nine months of 1991. The carrier's nine- month RPM total increased 29.4 percent, from 120,672,000 to 156,158,000, while ASMs rose 21.6 percent, from 279,944,000 to 340,377,000. The result is a 2.8 percentage point jump in the year- to-date load factor, from 43.1 percent in 1991 to 45.9 percent in 1992. Atlantic Coast Airlines has carried 567,308 passengers in the first nine months of 1992 vs. 456,780 passengers carried during the same period last year, a 24.2 percent increase.
"We are very pleased with the traffic results in September, a month in which we historically experience a downturn in demand from the peak summer months," said Kerry Skeen, chief operating officer of Atlantic Coast Airlines. "We attribute the favorable traffic figures to several factors: the lingering effects of this summer's discount pricing initiatives; the increased number of complementary markets served with United Airlines from the Washington Dulles hub; and the expansion of United Airlines' international route network from Washington Dulles, where we offer many more on-line international connections this year than last year."
Atlantic Coast Airlines operates as United Express through a comprehensive marketing agreement with United Airlines. The two airlines coordinate flight schedules to provide passengers with convenient connections to destinations across the country and around the world from their hub at Washington Dulles International Airport. Atlantic Coast Airlines operates a fleet of 35 aircraft -- 22 British Aerospace Jetstream 32s and 13 Embraer Brasilia 120s. At Washington Dulles, the United Express carrier operates 114 daily departures, most of any airline, to 41 Eastern destinations. For each flight on United Express, passengers receive 500 miles credit in United Airlines' popular Mileage Plus frequent flyer program.
