ATLANTA SET TO HONOR TED TURNER

ATLANTA, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson has declared Wednesday, Feb. 10, as "Ted Turner Day" in Atlanta.
A salute to R.E. Turner, chairman of the board and president of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., will headline the 80th Annual Meeting of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB), on Feb. 10.
Turner is being honored for the economic benefits and global recognition his telecommunications corporation have afforded the city of Atlanta. Turner has been recognized around the world for his achievements and contributions and was named Time magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1991; however, he has never been honored by Atlanta, the city that has benefited most from his networks and subsidiary companies that have "placed Atlanta on everyone's map," said ACVB Chairman E. Earl Patton Jr.
"We are ecstatic to be recognizing Turner for all of his contributions to our city," said Patton. "His companies have provided jobs for countless people, have given us a two-time National League champion baseball team and have telecast Atlanta to the world, creating name recognition which helped us to compete for the 1996 Olympic Games," he added.
The luncheon meeting, co-sponsored by MCI Business Services, will be held at noon at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in the Peachtree Ballroom. The hotel is located at Peachtree Street and International Boulevard in downtown Atlanta.
Turner will deliver the keynote address during the ACVB's 80th Annual Meeting. Other speeches will be given by Maynard Jackson, mayor of Atlanta; Zell Miller, governor, state of Georgia; E. Earl Patton Jr., ACVB chairman of the board; and Spurgeon Richardson, ACVB president. Characters from Turner's Cartoon Network will also be on hand to entertain guests throughout the luncheon.
A new "City of Winners" poster will be unveiled and distributed to annual meeting attendees. The poster, designed by Atlanta artist Wayland Moore, captures the international magnitude of Turner and Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. is the leading supplier of entertainment and news programming for the cable television industry through its ownership of Cable News Network (CNN), CNN Headline News, CNN International (CNNI), TBS SuperStation, Turner Network Television (TNT), TNT Latin America, the Cartoon Network and SportSouth. Its operations also include U.S. and international program syndication and licensing, professional sports and real estate.
