ATLANTA PROJECT, NATIONSBANK VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE THANKSGIVING MEALS

ATLANTA, Nov. 25 ~PRNewswire~ -- Volunteers from The Atlanta Project's Southside Cluster, NationsBank and other Atlanta community groups and businesses plan to serve hot meals to approximately 700 homeless and housing development families in the Southside neighborhood on Thanksgiving Day.
Two groups of volunteers will help cook and serve traditional Thanksgiving meals at the M.L. King Middle School Cafeteria, 582 Connally St. in southeast Atlanta, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with meals served in two shifts, beginning at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Turkey and dressing dinners will be served with sides of mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce and buttered dinner rolls. Volunteers will serve up fresh apple and sweet potato pies for dessert.
"We're proud to be a part of this worthwhile endeavor," said Cheryl Benton-Phillips, corporate adviser to The Atlanta Project, NationsBank. "We've had an enthusiastic response from many of our associates who are excited about spending their holiday helping others."
Brenda Muhammud, cluster coordinator for the Southside Cluster, said the Thanksgiving Day event is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when Cluster volunteers and the business community work together as partners. "The Community Development Committee for Southside Cluster 6 has shown a tremendous amount of energy and spirit in pulling together such an outstanding effort that will help so many people."
As primary partner, NationsBank will provide volunteers throughout the day and funding for the event, with other community organizations helping in a variety of ways. The Marriott will help buy the food, and the hotel chain's head chef from the NationsBank Plaza has volunteered to help organize the kitchen and prepare the food Thanksgiving morning.
The Atlanta Housing Authority will provide bus transportation for housing development families and volunteers from the Fulton-Atlanta Community Action Authority, Inc., and Stovall T-Shirts will handle the second shift.
The Atlanta Project was begun by former President Jimmy Carter to improve the quality of life for those living in poverty in 20 targeted neighborhoods or clusters in Fulton, DeKalb and Clayton counties. NationsBank is working in partnership with Southside Cluster 6 to address its education~youth mentoring, public safety, housing, economic development, community development and health needs.
NationsBank is the fourth-largest bank holding company in the United States with $118 billion in assets and full-service banking centers in nine states and the District of Columbia.
