ATLANTA GAS LIGHT COMPANY FILES FOR INCREASE IN REVENUES OF 6.1 PERCENT

 ATLANTA, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Atlanta Gas Light Company (NYSE: ATG) filed proposed new rates with the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) that would increase annual company revenues by $62,530,000, or 6.1 percent.
 If approved as filed, the proposed rates would increase monthly residential bills by an average $2.50.
 The proposed increase results from various factors that raise the cost of serving the company's customers. Details of those factors are discussed in the filing. Principal reasons for the filing include the following:
 1. Additional investment to provide service to customers;
 2. The impact of the loss of the company's largest customer, who
 will receive service from the pipeline serving the company;
 3. A required accounting change to reflect the cost of employees'
 postretirement benefits;
 4. A need to increase the number of employees to maintain service
 quality;
 5. Increased depreciation expense; and
 6. The increased risk and responsibility relating to the federal
 restructuring of the natural gas industry.
 The company proposes that the rates become effective on May 1. If the PSC suspends the rates to permit time for hearings, it is likely that new rates would go into effect Oct. 1.
 Atlanta Gas Light Company is the largest distributor of natural gas in the Southeast. The company, which also operates under the trade names Georgia Natural Gas Company and Savannah Gas Company, serves more than 1.2 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in 228 Georgia communities, including metro Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, Brunswick, Macon, Rome, Savannah and Valdosta.
