ATLANTA GAS LIGHT COMPANY FILES ENERGY EFFICIENCY PLAN

ATLANTA, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlanta Gas Light Company (NYSE: ATG) today filed a plan before the Georgia Public Service Commission that, if approved, will improve energy efficiency, promote energy conservation and foster a cleaner environment.
The plan, called an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), contains a comprehensive assessment of customers' natural gas requirements and the company's plans to meet those needs. IRPs are developed by utilities to match energy supplies with the most efficient equipment and building improvements to meet customers' requirements at the lowest cost for energy services such as heating, cooling, cooking and manufacturing.
The plan's combination of educational programs and financial incentives will help customers benefit from the overall lower cost of natural gas energy services.
The company's IRP -- the first prepared by a natural gas utility in Georgia history -- was ordered by the PSC in November 1991. Earlier this year, Georgia Power Company and Savannah Electric and Power Company filed IRPs with the PSC.
In recognition of the importance of all energy sources for consumers, the company's plan calls for a working group to coordinate provision of conservation services to consumers by all energy utilities. A coordinated effort to provide conservation services will increase the benefits and reduce the costs to consumers for both natural gas and electric utility plans. For example, both the gas company's IRP and the electric companies' plans offer audits to analyze residential energy consumption. The proposed working group would focus on providing joint comprehensive energy audits that improve energy efficiency for residential consumers.
The working group also would address issues such as the environmental cost of energy consumption as well as opportunities to minimize the cost impact of other programs on Georgia's energy consumers. The gas company's plan is designed to reduce its customers' energy cost from the outset of the plan.
Programs proposed in the gas company's plan offer energy audits to analyze residential energy uses; incentives to install measures such as improved insulation, double-pane or storm windows, and other weatherization options; and financing for high-efficiency gas appliances. Programs for commercial and industrial energy users will be customized to match the specific requirements of each customer. The plan specifically encourages the use of natural gas vehicles as the preferred low-emission alternative to gasoline- and diesel-powered motor vehicles.
More than 452,000 Georgians are expected to benefit from participation in the plan by the year 2002. By the end of the planning period, an annual reduction of 66 million therms in the use of gas statewide is expected as a result of load-reducing demand-side management programs. The plan also addresses the company's load growth and encourages fuel switching from electricity to natural gas where environmental and economic benefits make using natural gas more economic than simply conserving electric energy. The load-building programs will result in an increased use of 25 million therms annually.
Atlanta Gas Light Company is the largest distributor of natural gas in the Southeast, serving 1.2 million customers in and around 227 Georgia communities. In some areas of the state, the company uses the trade name Georgia Natural Gas Company, and it serves the Savannah area as Savannah Gas Company.
