ATLANTA GAS LIGHT COMPANY EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH PSC DECISION
ATLANTA, Nov. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) today granted Atlanta Gas Light Company (NYSE: ATG) new rates that will increase annual company revenues by $4,921,000 effective Dec. 1.
In its decision the PSC authorized a 12.0 percent rate of return on equity.
In its filing the company was seeking a rate increase of $33,087,000.
 According to a company spokesman:
"Atlanta Gas Light Company has an obligation to its customers, its employees, its shareholders and to this state to strive to maintain a financially viable natural gas distribution company. This decision threatens that economic viability and, as a consequence, is not in the public interest.
"As a result, the company has no choice but to begin the costly process seeking judicial review of the commission's action and to prepare a new rate increase request.
"It is vital that people recognize that, while on the surface it may appear that ordering an unreasonably low rate award is good for consumers, this action will have the opposite effect. There can be no doubt that unreasonably restricting the company's revenues will result in increased costs and reduced service to customers. Those seeking to receive natural gas service may be disappointed and the efforts to enhance economic development for the benefit of all Georgians may be frustrated. No one is well served by this result.
"We are extremely disappointed by this decision."
Atlanta Gas Light Company is the largest natural gas distribution company in the Southeast, serving approximately 1.2 million customers in and around 227 Georgia communities. In some areas of the state the company uses the trade name Georgia Natural Gas Company and it serves the Savannah area as Savannah Gas Company.
