ATL RESTRUCTURES OPERATIONS

BOTHELL, Wash., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- ATL (Advanced Technology Laboratories Inc.) (NASDAQ: ATLI) said today that it is restructuring to accelerate its response to rapid, fundamental change occurring in the U.S. health care environment and to further streamline overall operations. This restructuring will result in a reduction of its worldwide work force by approximately 240 persons or about 11 percent.
"We strongly believe that ultrasound answers the increasing need for imaging technology that positively affects patient outcome and lowers medical costs," said Dennis C. Fill, chairman and chief executive officer. "For example, physicians have reported that recent advances of ATL's digital ultrasound technology have the potential to significantly benefit health care as measured by cost, time, diagnostic accuracy and avoidance of expensive, invasive procedures. However, given the continuing delays in the purchase of medical equipment caused by the uncertainty of emerging health care reform in the United States and the ongoing constraints imposed by the economic recession in Europe, we must take action to reduce our costs more aggressively than would have been otherwise necessary."
The company will incur a one-time restructuring charge of approximately $4.3 million in the third quarter to provide for severance payments and other costs associated with the restructuring. The company expects to report a loss for the third quarter ending Oct. 1, 1993.
"ATL remains financially strong with over $60 million in cash and securities as of the end of the second quarter and no long-term debt," Fill said. "By streamlining operations and continuing our investments in product development and improved business systems, we believe that we will be able to better serve our customers in this highly cost-sensitive environment."
ATL, with headquarters in Bothell, is a worldwide leader in the development, manufacture, marketing and service of medical ultrasound systems.
