ATL Products introduces the high performance ACL2/28 automated tape library.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 16, 1996--ATL Products Inc., an Odetics company (Nasdaq:ODETA/ODETB), Tuesday introduced the high performance ACL2/28 automated Digital Linear Tape (DLT) library, designed to meet the automated storage needs of midrange and high-end users.

Containing two powerful Quantum DLT4000 streaming tape drives, the ACL2/28 features ATL's industry-leading, highly reliable automated tape storage technology to produce a library solution that supports the needs of the most demanding high duty cycle applications.

In making the announcement, the company noted that ATL Products now offers one of the most complete lines of DLT automated libraries in the industry, spanning capacities from 560 gigabytes up to 5 terabytes, with expansion capabilities to more than 25 terabytes. In addition, the ATL family features automated libraries with from two to nine DLT drives.

The newest member of the company's 520 Series of small libraries, the ACL2/28 features two DLT4000 drives and 28 cartridges of 20 gigabytes each, for a total capacity of 560 gigabytes. With 2:1 data compression, the capacity exceeds one terabyte.

Each of the two DLT drives supports a sustained data transfer rate of 1.5 megabytes per second in native mode, at least three times faster than 8mm drives. With data compression enabled, the data rate doubles to 3 megabytes per second.

One of the new unit's many outstanding features is its ability to be upgraded to four drives and 52 cartridges in the field, to economically double the capabilities of the library as user needs grow, thereby avoiding the cost of installing a new or larger library.

With DLT's unique drive auto clean feature and on-line system administration feedback system, the ACL2/28 is capable of supporting true unattended operations.

``With the flood of data threatening to inundate the majority of companies, the ACL2/28 provides a low-cost, high-performance solution with a large capacity coupled with the most reliable media handling robotics in the industry. Performance and reliability at a reasonable cost are the key ingredients MIS managers are looking for today,'' said Chet Baffa, vice president marketing and sales of ATL Products.

``When the need for more storage capacity arrives, as it most certainly will, the ACL2/28 can be easily upgraded in two ways: with up to four drives to increase performance, and up to 52 cartridges to expand its capacity to more than one terabyte.''

Hewlett-Packard recently chose ATL's larger ACL4/52 as the preferred automated tape solution for its HP 9000 family of Business Servers. The combination of Hewlett-Packard server technology and ATL Products tape storage solution provides a powerful solution for the UNIX market.

The ACL4/52 has been certified on the HP 9000 Business Servers running HP Open View Omniback II under HP-UX 9.04 or HP-UX 10.0.

With more than 15 years of experience, ATL Products has refined its advanced robotics technology to produce a demonstrated mean swap between failure rating of more than 1 million swaps, making both the ACL2/28 and ACL4/52 ideal for heavy duty cycle applications such as OLTP and DSS.

The unique high quality design of every ATL Products library is subjected to rigorous in-house and field reliability testing to verify that the design specification targets are met in even the most extreme high duty cycle applications.

The suggested list price for the ACL2/28 is $33,000. For the ACL4/52, the suggested list price is $59,000. The ACL2/28 and ACL4/52 are both available now to authorized ATL resellers.

ATL Products, a wholly owned subsidiary of Odetics Inc., is the leading worldwide drive-independent supplier of automated tape library systems for the network server, midrange and mainframe computer markets. ATL automated libraries have earned an unsurpassed field-proven reputation for maximum reliability.

Building on the breakthrough robotic media handling technology developed by Odetics for broadcast video applications, ATL has optimized the mechanism for data storage applications. The company has created the most durable and flexible automated tape libraries on the market, with a certified rating of more than 1 million cartridge swaps between failure.

ATL provides service and support from its headquarters in Anaheim, as well as international facilities in Europe and Asia Pacific, with sales offices in major cities.
