ATL BEGINS CUSTOMER DELIVERIES OF ESP OPTION

BOTHELL, Wash., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- ATL (Advanced Technology Laboratories Inc.) (NASDAQ: ATLI) announced today that the company has begun customer deliveries of Extended Signal Processing (ESP), a recently introduced technology advance of ATL's digital Ultramark(R) 9 HDI(TM) system.
"In clinical meetings held around the world, physicians evaluating ESP technology have reported that it expands the potential of using ultrasound in a broader range of applications by providing new levels of ultrasound image clarity, detail and tissue differentiation," said David M. Perozek, ATL president and chief operating officer. "ATL is committed to an expeditious delivery of new technology after its introduction. Early achievement of this shipment milestone underscores our commitment."
ESP technology is a signal processing advancement by ATL that more fully utilizes the broad bandwidth information available from ATL's digital technology. It substantially reduces an artifact inherent in ultrasound imaging called speckle noise which has restricted the ability of ultrasound systems to clearly display tissue boundaries and subtle tissue variations.
ATL also began shipment today of its fifth broadband scanhead, the C7-4 Broadband Curved Array Scanhead for obstetrical, superficial abdominal and pediatric ultrasound examinations. The ESP option and the C7-4 scanhead are available to the HDI installed base as a field upgrade.
"In a clinical meeting of high-risk obstetrical specialists held at our company headquarters last week, a distinguished group of perinatologists reported they were able to visualize anatomical detail of the fetal brain, face and other structures not seen before with ultrasound at such an early state of development," Perozek said.
ATL, with headquarters in Bothell, is a worldwide leader in the development, manufacture, marketing and service of medical ultrasound systems. The company achieved revenues of $324 million in 1992 and employs over 2,000 people at locations around the world.
