ATHLETICS: Ruddock set for successful term.
A party of 40 athletes and coaches from Rugby & Northampton AC travelled to Spain to prepare for the new track and field campaign, and five of them performed beyond expectations in an International Grand Prix meeting on the Alicante track which was the last in a series of three held in the Costa Blanca area.
Standards were high, but Ruddock confirmed her excellent indoor winter form by winning her heat of the 100 metres in 11.9 seconds, into a headwind of three metres per second, before taking the final in 12.12 despite a poor start where she gave away three metres to the rest of the field.
Claire Spurway also qualified for the final, finishing sixth in 12.41, while Emma Bailey, who was at the meeting with a group of Loughborough University athletes, finished seventh in 12.62.
Martin Rutt ran a superb mens 100 metres behind British international Allyn Condon to take the bronze medal in 11.3, also into a headwind, and there was bronze as well for Claire Pearson who qualified from the heats of the 100 metres hurdles in third place in 14,46 before improving her personal best, and the club record, to 14.18 into a wind of 1.8 m/s for a superb third in the final.
