ATHENEUM'S HUGE MYTHOLOGICAL MURAL TO BE UNVEILED
 TONIGHT AT CDBA BENEFIT
DETROIT, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Atheneum Suite Hotel's 25-foot diptych mural, painted by local artist Hubert Massey, will be unveiled tonight during "The Magic and Myths of Greece," a benefit for the Central Business District Association.
The event celebrates 2,500 years of democracy in Greece and is hosted by Maria and Ted Gatzaros and Vicki and Jim Papas, developers of the new hotel. Proceeds from the $75-per-person affair benefit the CDBA, a non-profit organization working for the advancement of downtown Detroit.
The mural is based on a Greek marble sculpture carved in 25 B.C. that depicts the death of Laocoon and his two sons, Antiphas and Thymbraeus.
Laocoon (name meaning "very perceptive") was a priest to the god Apollo at Troy. According to Anthony S. Mercatante in "World Mythology and Legend," Laocoon offended Apollo by marrying Antiope and "laying with her" before the god's statue.
During the final year of the Trojan War, Laocoon was chosen priest of the god Poseidon because the Trojans earlier had slain the priest of the god.
The Greeks, pretending to prepare for departure from Troy, left a huge wooden horse on the shore. Laocoon opposed bringing the horse into Troy and hurled a spear at it, warning the Trojans not to accept any gifts from the Greeks because he feared them. Once again, this angered Apollo.
Because of this sin, the Trojans ordered Laocoon to offer a sacrifice to Poseidon, requesting him to cause storms on the route of the enemy fleet.
While offering a sacrificial bull, two enormous serpents sent by Apollo (or Athena) came out of the sea and entwined themselves around Laocoon and his two sons. The three were crushed by the creatures which then coiled up at the foot of Athena's statue in the citadel temple. The Trojans, unaware of Laocoon's previous sacrilege, accepted the horse as a dedication to Apollo. The acceptance led to Troy's destruction.
The Atheneum Suite Hotel is at 1000 Brush Ave. in Detroit.
