ATAS TO INSTALL BILL COSBY, ANDY GRIFFITH, TED KOPPEL, SHELDON LEONARD,
DINAH SHORE AND R.E. (TED) TURNER INTO ITS HALL OF FAME
ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- At a gala black-tie ceremony and entertainment tribute this Saturday, Oct. 3, at Walt Disney World Resort here before 500 celebrities, industry executives, friends and international media, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) will install six additional television legends into its Television Academy Hall of Fame.
They are Bill Cosby, Andy Griffith, Ted Koppel, producer- director-actor Sheldon Leonard, Dinah Shore, and R.E. (Ted) Turner. The six, all confirmed to be present for the ceremony in Orlando, will represent the 51st through 56th inductees since formation of the Academy's Hall of Fame in 1984. Hosts of the induction ceremonies, to be conducted in the Grand Ballroom of Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Convention Center, will be Ed McMahon and Betty White.
Among the presenters will be Phylicia Rashad for Cosby; Don Knotts, George Lindsey and Fred Silverman for Griffith; Hall of Fame inductee Roone Arledge and Drew Koppel (son) for Ted Koppel; Cosby for Leonard; and Hank Aaron and Larry King for Turner. Other past Hall of Fame inductees confirmed to be present for the ceremonies are Leonard Goldenson, Don Hewitt, Frank Stanton and Mike Wallace.
Prior to the Hall of Fame installation, some of the attending celebrities along with Academy President Leo Chaloukian and Walt Disney Attractions President Judson Green will participate in a dedication ceremony for a new East Coast home within the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park of the Television Academy Hall of Fame Plaza. Also participating in the ground-breaking will be Edgar J. Scherick, a member of the Academy's Executive Committee and chairman of ATAS' Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Chaloukian and Scherick will also appear during the installation program.
The new plaza, to be completed next year, will be similar in replication and concept to the existing home of the 17-month-old Hall of Fame Plaza in North Hollywood, Calif., that exhibits -- around a 27-foot Emmy Award statue -- bronze sculptures of such Hall of Fame television legends as Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Lucille Ball, Sid Caesar, Carol Burnett, Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Mary Tyler Moore and others.
Hall of Fame ceremonies in future years for other inductees may also be conducted in a similar manner to those planned for Saturday in Orlando. It is also expected that future ceremonies will be nationally televised specials.
Candidates for "Hall of Fame" induction are first voted on by the Academy's board of governors with final determinations made by a vote of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
