AT/COMM ANNOUNCES NEW RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION SYSTEMS FOR TRANSPORTATION

MARBLEHEAD, Mass., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- AT/Comm, the makers of non-stop electronic toll collection systems announced today new related systems to increase efficiency and convenience for motorists in parking garages, taxi cab drivers in airports, and truckers traveling interstate highways. The Marblehead, Mass.-based concern said the new systems are related and incorporate the same "smart transponder" in use today for electronic toll collection on the Illinois Tollway.
AT/Comm developed the first two-way radio transponder in electronic toll collection which uses "read-write" communication. The dashboard placed, cigarette pack-sized device can be "read" or identified by radio waves and can be "written" to, or sent information via radio frequency. Because the AT/Comm transponder is equipped with a LCD visual display and audio speaker, information can be sent via roadside beacons to the transponder which can inform motorists of certain traffic conditions.
"EasyPark" is one of three new systems AT/Comm announced today which is used for automated parking. Motorists equipped with an AT/Comm transponder will no longer need to fumble for change and wait at a gate to pay for parking garage fees. With EasyPark, motorists can prepay parking fares and have the gate automatically lift through communication between the AT/Comm transponder and reader systems in the lane. The account electronically stored in the transponder is debited each time.
"TaxiLink" is another system introduced by AT/Comm for airports. Using the same transponder used in electronic toll collection and automated parking, taxi cab drivers with this device can also be notified via the LCD display and audio speaker on the device as to which terminal to proceed to in need of passenger pick-ups. AT/Comm reader systems throughout the airport can communicate and monitor the activity of all commercial vehicle operators to lessen "dwell time" and increase vehicle throughput and capacity for airport ground transportation.
"TruckPass" is a new multi-application system for truckers which again makes use of the same AT/Comm transponder. For truckers, the microprocessor based AT/Comm transponder will store in its memory interstate registration and commercial information. Truckers will no longer need to constantly pull-over at state lines to register state tax and commercial information. In conjunction with roadside AT/Comm reader systems, truckers will travel non-stop and be pre-cleared by radio communication which will validate registration information.
AT/Comm believes it has a significant competitive edge in that a single AT/Comm transponder can simultaneously perform electronic toll collection, automated parking, airport ground transit and trucking applications. "The industry doesn't want expensive and incompatible systems that don't work together", said John Rourke, vice president of sales and marketing at AT/Comm. "The AT/Comm transponder performs many transportation applications yet only costs $38 which makes it quite attractive to various transportation authorities," he added.
