 JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T Universal Card Services (UCS) said it has won the 1993 Excellence Through Employee Involvement Award for programs that inform, involve and maximize contributions from each of its more than 2,700 employees.
 The award, given by the Employee Involvement Association, is designed to promote awareness of the competitive value of employee involvement. This is the first year the award has been presented.
 "Any business today that does not realize the full potential of each employee is in trouble," said Bernie Sander, EIA president. "This means more than just hiring the best -- it means creating an environment where all employees are motivated to do their best."
 Sander cited several UCS programs that earned the Jacksonville-based bank credit card company the award. Its "Your Ideas/Your Universe" employee suggestion program attracts more than 1,200 suggestions per month. The company has gained millions of dollars in new revenues and reduced expenses through the program.
 Bursting communication barriers is a priority at UCS. With its weekly "Meeting of the Minds" program, a member of the company's executive team meets with employees in small groups for informal discussions. Additionally, all employees are invited to attend the company's quarterly business meetings, where UCS's business is discussed through presentations and a question and answer session.
 At the quarterly business meeting and other meetings there are feedback forms to facilitate communications. Each quarter, a telephone survey is conducted to learn employees' current attitudes toward the workplace.
 UCS' annual Employee Opinion Survey has a 76 percent return rate. Its positive results outperform other high-performing companies. Programs are in place to address concerns raised by surveys and focus groups.
 A wellness program promotes the health and general well-being of employees. It includes a 24-hour fitness center and regular sessions on topics such as balancing work and family, stress reduction, personal finance and more.
 UCS encourages training both on-site and in local colleges and universities through its tuition assistance program.

 The Employee Involvement Association is a private, non-profit international organization based in Arlington, Va. It organizes and administers conferences, publications and awards that promote the importance of human resources in business. It was formerly called the National Association of Suggestion Systems.
 AT&T Universal Card Services markets the AT&T Universal Card, a combined credit card, long distance calling card and ATM card. It has headquarters in Jacksonville, with locations in Columbus, Ga., Houston and Salt Lake City.
