AT&T TO RESTRUCTURE CONSUMER PRODUCTS CUSTOMER SERVICES FACILITIES
 IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T) today announced a restructuring of its consumer products customer services facilities which will affect about 283 jobs here.
The AT&T Atlanta Service Center, located on Fulton Industrial Boulevard, will cut 168 jobs. This center repairs and refurbishes residential telephone equipment.
Another facility at the same location, the National Distribution Services Center, will be phased out over the next 14 months, affecting 115 jobs. This center processes orders for shipping leased equipment directly to customers.
"There is a trend toward fewer people leasing residential equipment," said Esther Silver-Parker, AT&T assistant vice president of Public Relations. "As a result, the volume of work has declined. In response to a constantly changing market, we continue to manage for optimum size and structure. Although these jobs are being phased out, we are projecting an increase in the overall number of AT&T jobs in Atlanta.
"In managing this restructuring we are doing everything possible to minimize the effects of these changes on people," said Silver-Parker.
"All employees affected will be eligible for company benefits, including transfers, retraining and outplacement counseling opportunities, and lump sum payments for those who leave the company."
AT&T employs 20,000 people in metropolitan Atlanta.
