AT&T TO PROVIDE MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS CENTER FOR DEMOCRATIC
 NATIONAL CONVENTION
Reporters who need a place to write and file stories on the Democratic National Convention are invited to use a fully equipped AT&T Media Communications Center that has opened and will remain available through the end of the convention Thursday, July 16.
The center is on the second floor of One Penn Plaza, on 33rd Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues -- across 33rd Street from the Madison Square Garden convention site.
Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, July 12, and 24 hours a day Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16.
Available to news media representatives on a first-come, first- served basis, the center will be particularly useful to reporters without assigned workspace.
The Media Communications Center will have phones, fax machines, copiers and a range of NCR notebook, notepad and desktop computers. Reporters may plug their own computers into a dataport on one of several of the AT&T Public Phone 2000 model, a multifaceted "portable office" whose other features include foreign-language screens and a computer keyboard that doubles as a telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD). Television will be available for remote convention viewing, and the center will have a refreshment lounge.
Regular AT&T rates will apply to phone calls from standard and public pay phones, and there will be a charge for fax transmissions. Reporters may make collect calls, or they may charge calls to AT&T or local telephone company calling cards. The AT&T Public Phone 2000 also accepts major credit cards.
In addition to the Media Communication Center at One Penn Plaza, AT&T will provide three smaller media centers Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16. They will be at the Paramount theater in Madison Square Garden (open from 1 p.m. to the close of the convention session each day), the New York Hilton (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and the Ramada Hotel (8 a.m. to close of session).
Adjacent to the main media center will be a product-demonstration center, where reporters and others can use several recently introduced AT&T products and services, and a retail center, which will lease and sell AT&T phone and fax products and NCR computers. The product center offers a demonstration of the touch screen-based AT&T/NCR Electronic Voting System that delegates will use at the convention. These centers will be open Monday, July 13, through Thursday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
As official technology and long-distance provider for the convention, AT&T is offering a comprehensive package or custom-designed products, services and applications to meet the needs of the Democratic National Convention Committee and delegates, journalists and other convention-goers whose presence will add about 40,000 people to New York City.
