AT&T TO EXPAND CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER IN PITTSBURGH

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T will expand a customer service center in Pittsburgh, creating 180 customer representative jobs that will be offered to qualified employees whose positions are being eliminated from the company's International Operating Center (IOC), the company announced today.
The Pittsburgh center was chosen for expansion from among 13 similar facilities around the U.S. after the company reached agreement with the Communication Workers of America (CWA) to increase the work week there from 37-1/2 to 40 hours.
The elimination of jobs at the IOC in Pittsburgh was the result of several factors, including a steep decline in the number of calls to Cuba and a change in the way they were handled, and the company's ongoing need to improve operating efficiency and help hold down prices to customers.
"The fact that we're able to offer jobs to those employees whose positions were eliminated at the IOC is a direct result of cooperation and teamwork between the company and the CWA," said Edith Melton, area division manager of the IOC.
Under the agreement with the union, current employees of the customer service center will go to a 40 hour week, and will receive one- time payments of $1,000 or $2,500, depending on the contract under which they work.
Testing and training is under way and employees will be phased into the new positions over the next six weeks. All of the jobs will be filled internally, Melton said. Customer representatives answer inquiries from consumers about AT&T long-distance services and residential long-distance phone bills. The customer service center is located at 1500 Penn St. in Pittsburgh.
