AT&T SUPPLIES TECHNOLOGY BEHIND TV NETWORK ELECTION PROJECTIONS BY VRS
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Did you ever wonder how the networks managed to figure out who won the election so quickly -- even before all the votes were counted? Well, thanks to a partnership between AT&T (NYSE: T) Global Business Communications Systems and Voter Research and Surveys (VRS), Americans will be able to know who won the presidential election before they go to bed.
VRS is a cooperative effort put together by CBS, ABC, NBC and CNN to provide election projections at the end of election day. The formation of VRS has allowed the networks to cut polling costs dramatically.
Election projections are based on the actual vote counts from nearly 4,000 precincts across the country. When the polls close and the voting machines are opened, precinct officials at those sample locations throughout the country use an AT&T 800 number to phone in the number of votes from the machines. The callers are prompted by AT&T's CONVERSANT(R) Voice Information Systems to enter a variety of election results using their telephone touchtone buttons.
The information is tabulated by VRS' mainframe computer. When all of the sample precincts within a state report their results, a projected winner is provided to the networks.
"On election night, the media determine the winners, as actual votes aren't counted until weeks later. Based on the information we collect, the news media actually call the races. So our collection system must be accurate, accessible and easy to use by our reporters. The CONVERSANT System does exactly what we tell it to, year after year. It's extremely reliable," said Bruce Sobolov, VRS associate director, Equipment and Administration.
