AT&T SAYS IT WILL HANDLE 97.2 MILLION
 LONG-DISTANCE CALLS ON MOTHER'S DAY
PHILADELPHIA, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T) today predicted it will handle 97.2 million long-distance calls on Mother's Day, a record for holiday calling.
The previous record was 91.8 million calls, set on Christmas Day 1991.
In Ft. Washington and Harrisburg, Pa., and Pittsburgh, 372 AT&T long-distance operators will be on duty throughout Mother's Day to handle a projected 315,000 operator-assisted calls from all over Pennsylvania. At the AT&T International Operating Center in Pittsburgh, 670 operators will handle approximately 58,000 international calls from all over the United States to nearly 250 countries and areas around the world.
If you live in the continental United States and Mom lives in another state, AT&T says you can talk to her for 20 minutes for less than $3, as long as you dial direct and call before 5 p.m. AT&T's low weekend rates will be in effect until 5 p.m. on Mother's Day, an average savings of 43 percent off AT&T's weekday prices for direct-dialed, out- of-state calls.
AT&T's weekend prices apply to all calls dialed directly to all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as to operator-assisted and card calls.
Mother's Day calling patterns differ significantly from typical business day traffic, with more calls routed off the primary city-to- city routes and to areas of the country with pockets of retirement communities, such as Florida and the Southwest. Calls on a holiday like Mother's Day are typically twice as long as those on business days.
To help consumers get the most from their long-distance calling, AT&T suggests consumers dial direct and call between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., when calling volumes traditionally are lower.
AT&T also suggests a practical gift for today's cost- and calorie- conscious Moms: AT&T Long Distance Certificates are available in $25 gift packs at AT&T Phone Centers or by calling 800-GIFT-ATT.
