AT&T PROJECTS 110.5 MILLION CALLS ON MOTHER'S DAY

CHICAGO, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In May 1893, Mother's Day was not yet an official celebration in the United States, and telephoning was still a newfangled notion.
There were only four phones for every thousand Americans. Out-of- state calling was rare. Coast-to-coast service would not begin until 1915, and the first international call would not be made until 1927.
One hundred years later, on Mother's Day, 1993, there are 550 phones for every thousand Americans, and calling across the country or around the world could not be easier. AT&T (NYSE: T) estimates it will handle 110.5 million calls on Sunday, up 8.5 percent from last years's total of 101.8 million. Many of these calls will be placed to America's 70 million mothers.
To help consumers get the most from their long-distance calling, AT&T suggests consumers dial direct and call between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. when calling volumes traditionally are lower.
Mother's Day calling patterns differ significantly from typical business day traffic, with more calls routed off the primary city-to- city routes and to areas of the country with pockets of retirement communities, such as Florida and the Southwest. Calls on a holiday like Mother's Day are typically twice as long as those on business days.
AT&T makes it simple and economical to call on Mother's Day and every other day. Under the company's new service concept, The i Plan(SM), consumers can get personalized combination of services, products and discounts.
Wherever and whenever consumers call, whether across a state or around the world, AT&T has an i Plan to meet their specific needs.
For example, for consumers who make $40 worth of domestic, direct- dialed long distance calls each month, AT&T Simple Savings(SM) provides a 25 percent discount on direct-dialed calls to a single area code the consumer selects and a 15 percent discount on calls to all other area codes in the United States.
Other consumers may benefit from the AT&T AnyHour(R) savings option, which, for $10 a month, gives them one hour's worth of direct-dialed, out-of-state calls made at any time.
