AT&T PROJECTS 110.5 MILLION CALLS ON MOTHER'S DAY

MIAMI, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- In May, 1893, Mother's Day was not yet an official celebration in the United States, and telephoning was still a newfangled notion.
There were only four phones for every thousand Americans. Out-of-state calling was rare. Coast-to-coast service would not begin until 1915, and the first international call would not be made until 1927.
Now, 100 years later, on Mother's Day, 1993, there are 550 phones for every thousand Americans, and calling across the country or around the world could not be easier. AT&T estimates it will handle 110.5 million calls on Sunday, up 8.5 percent from last year's total of 101.8 million. Many of these calls will be placed to America's 70 million mothers.
Consumers can save money by calling on nights and weekends. For instance, the standard AT&T 10-minute direct-dialed calling price between 11 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Sunday from Jacksonville to Tucson, Ariz. is $1.30 (plus tax).
Customers can save even more money with customized services under The i PLAN. Under the company's new service concept, The i PLAN (sm), consumers can get personalized combinations of services, products and discounts.
For example, for consumers who make $40 worth of domestic, direct- dialed long distance calls each month, AT&T Simple Savings (sm) provides a 25 percent discount on direct-dialed calls to a single area code the consumer selects and a 15 percent discount on calls to all other area codes in the United States.
Other consumers may benefit from the AT&T AnyHour(R) Savings option, which, for $10 a month, gives them one hour's worth of direct-dialed, out-of-state calls made at any time.
Consumers interested in learning more about The i PLAN should call 800-426-4752.
