AT&T PICKS SUN EXECUTIVE TO LEAD CONSUMER PRODUCTS BUSINESS

NEW YORK, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Carl S. Ledbetter Jr., an executive with Sun Microsystems, today was named president of AT&T Consumer Products, effective May 1.
Ledbetter, 43, who has worked as an executive in marketing and engineering in the computer business for a dozen years, succeeds Kenneth M. Bertaccini, whose assignment as senior vice president and chief quality officer of AT&T was announced in January.
AT&T consumer Products, headquartered in Parsippany, N.J., is a market leading, global business unit of AT&T that designs, manufactures, sells and leases communications product, including corded and cordless phones, answering systems, the AT&T VideoPhone(TM) 2500, cellular telephones and the first personal communicator.
"We are excited to have Carl join us," said Robert M. Kavner, AT&T group executive-communications products. "He has a strong grasp of technology, which is essential to our continued development of new consumer applications in today's merging environment of telecommunication, computers and consumer electronics.
"We were looking for someone with experience, like Carl's, in view of the rapid advancement of our consumer products business into new product categories such as personal communicators," Kavner said.
Ledbetter has been a corporate vice president of Sun Microsystems Inc., and general manager of SunSelect, one of the $4 billion computer maker's eight operating divisions. The SunSelect division, headquartered in the Boston area, makes and markets UNIX and PC-based networking products.
Prior to joining Sun in 1991, Ledbetter ran his own firm, Decision Point Consulting, for two years. Before that he was president and chief executive officer of Control Data corporation's ETA Systems subsidiary, a supercomputer manufacturer, and vice president of engineering and scientific products for Prime Computer. Earlier, from 1981 to 1986, he served in several assignments at IBM.
Born in Fort Riley, Kan., Ledbetter holds undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees in mathematics, from the University of Redlands, Brandeis University and Clark University, respectively.
Before beginning his business career, he was an assistant professor of mathematics at Wellesley College and the executive assistant to the president and dean of academic planning at Sonoma State University.
In the early 1980s, he was named by former California Governor Jerry Brown as the founding director of the Southern California Earthquake Preparedness Agency.
Ledbetter, his wife, and two children, ages 12 and 13, will be relocating to New Jersey from Westford, Mass.
