AT&T PARADYNE TO PROVIDE CUSTOMERS CHANNEL ACCESS SYSTEM

AT&T PARADYNE TO PROVIDE CUSTOMERS CHANNEL ACCESS SYSTEM
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T Paradyne announced at

InterOp today that it will provide customers, beginning in February 1993, with its PIXNET XL/5000(B) Channel Access System (CAS) that allows them to send high-speed and high-volume data from IBM mainframe computers to peripheral devices, such as printers and tape drives, anywhere in the world.
Developed by AT&T Paradyne, in cooperation with IBM, the XL/5000 CAS will extend IBM's Enterprise Systems Connection Architecture (ESCON)(A) capabilities over unlimited distances via E3/T3 communications lines at speeds up to 45 megabits per second. Presently, printers and tape drives typically are attached to the mainframe via a channel, which limits the distance between the devices and the processor.
Based on IBM's 3172 Interconnect Controller Model 2 and its specialty software, as well as AT&T Paradyne's channel access software, the XL/5000 provides extension for up to three ESCON fiber channels on IBM mainframes and plug-compatible mainframes, without requiring changes or additional software on the IBM mainframe.
IBM will provide the base hardware platform and AT&T Paradyne will produce the software, as well as certain adapter cards. AT&T Paradyne, as an IBM business partner, will be the primary point-of-contact for sales, marketing and service for XL/5000 products.
"With the trend of increased availability of high-speed communications facilities and the need to provide channel-attached performance to users in remote locations, AT&T Paradyne and IBM are working together to deliver total end-to-end application solutions," said Nancy Goguen, AT&T Paradyne's Channel Connectivity Products vice president.
The multiprocessor system consists of a single 1486 processor for management functions and multiple 1960 RISC processors for real-time host interface and communication processing. A fully distributed real- time operating system ensures maximum data throughput.
With additional design features, such as modular hardware and software, sophisticated diagnostics and built-in remote fault isolation, the XL/5000 is designed for maximum availability. Utilizing AT&T Paradyne's Remote Trouble-Shooting Facility (RTSF), support specialists can remotely diagnose software problems and immediately provide any available solutions.
Release 1 of the XL/5000 provides support for high-speed tape systems over E1/T1 and E3/T3 communications facilities; including the IBM 3480, 3490 and 3490E magnetic tape subsystems, as well as the IBM 3495 Tape Library Dataserver and other plug-compatible tape library systems. Release 1 will also provide support for the IBM 3174 Establishment Controller in a non-SNA environment.
AT&T Paradyne's XL/5000 CAS can be integrated with IBM's 3172 family of products to provide customers with wide area channel extension and LAN gateway functionality integrated within the same enclosure and controlled under a common network management system, IBM's NetView(A).
Prices for the XL/5000 CAS will begin at $120,000, with worldwide distribution.
