AT&T PARADYNE OFFERS FIRST DSU/CSU WITH BUILT-IN MODEM FOR REMOTE DIAGNOSTICS AND CONFIGURATION

LARGO, Fla., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T Paradyne today unveiled the first high-speed network access products with built-in modems that allow customers to dramatically reduce costly network downtime by performing remote diagnostics and software upgrades.
The new ACCULINK(R) 3160 and 3164 T1 and fractional T1 DSU/CSUs (data service unite/channel service unit) ensure dial modem access to remote units, even if the T1/FT1 lines fail.
The products are also the first to have a swappable DSU/CSU card architecture. Future modules will be released to support cell relay services and a PRI (Primary Rate ISDN) plug-in module. No other vendor offers such hardware modularity. With AT&T Paradyne's unique architecture, the units can be upgraded in the field for new and enhanced functionalities. This precludes the need to replace the DSU when new features are needed.
Developed by AT&T Paradyne and its AT&T Bell Laboratories group, the new products are also the first that allow customers to combine voice and data access lines as a standard feature, thus eliminating costly and separate access charges. This "drop-and-insert" port expansion is enabled with microchips that vendors provide as an added cost option of up to $1,000.
Another unique aspect of the products is that they are the first with redundant DC power access ports, in addition to the AC power capability.
The DSU/CSUs are also the first to be covered by an on-site warranty program, as well as a full array of professional management and maintenance services, available through AT&T Paradyne's NetCare(R) service. Other DSU/CSU vendors require customers to return their products to the factory, thus causing costly network disruptions.
ACCULINK DSU/CSUs were designed to provide customer investment protection by offering migration capabilities to additional network services as their network and applications needs dictate. An internal card version will be available in March 1994, which will allow customers with nested AT&T Paradyne COMSPHERE(R) modems and DSUs to upgrade to FT1 and T1 services.
In April 1994, the standalone models will be equipped with an integrated SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) interface. Customers can receive this feature via a software download using the built-in modem.
The ACCULINK 3160 DSU/CSU, with two synchronous ports, and the ACCULINK 3164 model with four synchronous ports both have a DSX-1 port (to connect to digital PBXs and T1 multiplexers) to maximize the use of the T1 facility. This provides a connection for a PBX or any other device that has a DSX-1 interface. Each unit also has an integrated ACCULINK 3150 ESF T1 CSU enabling a single, compact model to offer direct access to the wide area network. Prices for the units begin at $2,995 and are available through AT&T Paradyne sales and distribution channels. The products will be demonstrated at AT&T Paradyne's booth at the ComNet trade show in Washington, D.C., Jan. 25-27. For more product information, call 800-482-3333.
