AT&T PARADYNE ANNOUNCES PLANS TO DELIVER THE FIRST HIGH-SPEED
CREDIT CARD MODEM FOR NOTEBOOK COMPUTERS
LARGO, Fla., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T Paradyne announced today plans to deliver the first high-speed (14.4 Kbps) credit card modem for notebook computers. The modem's data compression feature will support the highest data transmission rates (57.6 Kbps) in the market.
The higher throughput offered by the company's credit card modems translates to shorter connect time and customer savings. Current credit card modems operate only at 2.4 Kbps. Initially, AT&T Paradyne will OEM the modems to notebook computer manufacturers.
Physical and electrical interface requirements of the modem are compliant with the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) Release 2.0 specifications. The modem will support data and facsimile communications over both the Public Switched and Cellular Telephone Networks. The data access arrangement used with the modem is designed to meet United States and international telecommunications authority network access requirements.
"The company has again demonstrated its commitment to meet the needs of our OEM customers," said Jean-Claude Vrignaud, AT&T Paradyne's Advanced Technology Products vice president and general manager. "AT&T, as whole, is committed to providing OEM customers with total networking solutions. The company was the pioneer in modem development and now is a leader in the development of high-speed credit card modems. This modem's standard form and interface will make user installation easier and provide interchangeability between computers."
Scheduled availability for the modems is August 1992.
AT&T Paradyne develops, manufactures and markets a full line of complementary and global data communications products and services, and provides a full range of customer support.
