AT&T OFFERS FIRST 800 SERVICE; CUSTOMERS CAN START AND STOP AS NEEDED

ATLANTA, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Georgia businesses that experience seasonal demand for their products or services can, for the first time, start and stop 800 service whenever they like without giving up their established toll-free numbers.
AT&T 800 On Reserve(SM) Service "provides something business have been telling us they wanted -- 800 Service available on demand," said Dan Schulman, AT&T's national product director for 800 Service.
Previously, seasonal customers either had to pay for their 800 service during periods when they weren't using it, or they surrendered their advertised 800 numbers. On the next cycle, they would have to begin all over again with new 800 numbers, since their original numbers, in many cases, would already be reassigned to someone else.
"A number of businesses need 800 Service only on a seasonal basis -- or for short-term promotions or sales. Then they'd like to deactivate their 800 Service until the next time it's needed. Ski areas, summer resorts and Christmas catalog sales are typical examples. This service should suit their needs to a tee," Schulman said.
AT&T 800 On Reserve Service can be activated or turned off within 24 hours, providing customers with the flexibility they need for short-term or seasonal applications. There is no comparable 800 Service available in the marketplace today.
As an added benefit, when a customer's number is on reserve status, callers will hear a pre-selected announcement telling them that the 800 number is not in service -- and giving them a forwarding number if desired.
AT&T's advanced 800 features -- for call routing, call prompting and specialized announcements -- are available with the new service. AT&T's five-minute 800 Service Assurance Policy is also automatically included for all On Reserve Service customers.
The monthly service fee is $35 when service is turned on and only $5 monthly when service is inactive. Installation is $43.50 for each 800 number. Usage rates vary depending on time of day, day of week and distance. Customers also qualify for sizable discounts based on usage comi?tments and their choice of 18- or 36-month term plans. There is a $5 charge each time established service is turned on again.
The tariff for 800 On Reserve Service has been filed with the Federal Communications Commission to become effective April 12.
