AT&T NETWORK SYSTEMS SIGNS CONTRACT WITH PILIPINO TELEPHONE
 MORRISTOWN, N.J., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T Network Systems

(NYSE: T) announced today that it has signed a contract with the Pilipino Telephone Corporation (Piltel) of Manila to expand Piltel's cellular telecommunications network in the Philippines. The contract is valued at approximately $82 million.
AT&T has already installed the first phase of Piltel's cellular in Manila under a 1991 contract. This expansion will enable Piltel to provide broad national cellular coverage with additional AT&T AUTOPLEX (R) System 1000 equipment, which includes mobile switching centers (MSCs), Series II digital cell sites, microcells, and associated software and installation services. It will more than double the number of cell sites already installed, as well as add advanced capabilities.
AT&T's microcellular technology, based on a concept which calls for splitting cells into small "microcells," allows for higher re-use of radio frequencies than that of a traditional cell site, and will, therefore, increase the capacity and flexibility of Piltel's cellular network.
And because of their small size, AT&T's Microcell units can be installed in hard-to-reach areas, both inside and outside of buildings, and on heavily travelled city streets. This is a particularly significant advantage for customers in metropolitan Manila, where approximately 90 to 95 percent of cellular phones are hand-held portable phones.
"We're pleased because this not only expands our network throughout the Philippines, but it will also enable us to provide the advanced services that microcellular technology offers and prepare us for digital technology as well," said Ignatius Yenko, director of finance for Piltel.
"This expansion will place Piltel in the forefront of cellular communications," said Niels Favre, vice president for AT&T Network Wireless Systems. "And with microcells, more and more cellular subscribers will be able to use their portable telephones wherever they go. This represents an important step toward the beginnings of personal communications in the Philippines.
AT&T will provide full system support that includes planning, installation, maintenance and training.
AT&T's AUTOPLEX equipment is manufactured in the United States at the company's manufacturing facility in Columbus, Ohio.
